Chapter 12 — The Night Julian Almost Lost Her Again

Chapter 12 — The Night Julian Almost Lost Her Again

The first thing Clara heard was the rain.

The second was the gunshot.

The third was Julian screaming her name.

“CLARA!”

She opened her eyes.

The room was dark.

Her body felt strangely weightless.

For one terrifying second, she didn't know where she was.

Then she remembered.

The mansion.

Lily.

Gabriel.

The threats.

She tried to sit up.

Pain shot through her shoulder.

A man's hand covered her mouth.

“Don't scream.”

Clara froze.

The voice was familiar.

Martin.

She turned her head.

He was standing beside the bed.

“You?”

“Quiet.”

“Where is Julian?”

“Alive.”

“Where is Lily?”

Martin hesitated.

“Safe.”

Clara stared at him.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Then let me go.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Martin looked toward the bedroom door.

“Because they're coming.”

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

Then footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Heavy.

Slow.

Several people.

Martin whispered:

“They found you.”

Clara's heart began racing.

“Who?”

Martin looked at her.

“The Black Rose.”

The bedroom door burst open.

Three men entered.

Black suits.

Black gloves.

No insignia.

The first carried a gun.

Martin stepped in front of Clara.

“She's not going anywhere.”

The man laughed.

“You were paid to deliver her.”

“I changed my mind.”

“You don't get to.”

The gun lifted.

Martin moved.

The shot exploded through the room.

Clara screamed.

Martin fell.

“Martin!”

She rushed toward him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

He grabbed her wrist.

“Run.”

“But—”

“Find Julian.”

The men advanced.

Clara ran.

Barefoot.

Through the dark hallway.

She didn't know where she was going.

She only knew she had to survive.

She reached the staircase.

Then stopped.

Below her stood Julian.

Blood covered his forehead.

He looked up.

Their eyes met.

“Clara.”

She almost collapsed with relief.

“Julian!”

He ran upstairs.

She ran toward him.

They collided halfway.

He wrapped his arms around her.

“I thought I'd lost you.”

“I thought they killed you.”

“Not tonight.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then pulled back.

“Where is Martin?”

Clara looked behind her.

“He's hurt.”

Julian's face changed.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“I am done staying behind.”

Julian stared at her.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

They turned together.

The men appeared at the end of the hallway.

Julian raised his weapon.

“Drop it.”

They didn't.

Then the mansion's lights came on.

Security officers flooded the hall.

The attackers were surrounded.

One tried to escape.

Julian tackled him.

The man hit the floor.

His mask fell away.

Julian stared.

He knew him.

“Robert?”

The man who had been head of Vance security for twelve years looked up.

“I'm sorry.”

Julian's voice was ice.

“You betrayed me.”

Robert said nothing.

“Who paid you?”

Silence.

Julian grabbed his collar.

“Who?”

Robert smiled.

“Ask your father.”

Julian froze.

Nathaniel was gone.

His bedroom was empty.

His car was gone.

His passport was missing.

On the desk was a single note.

I never wanted her dead.

Julian read it twice.

Then Clara took it.

There was another line beneath.

I wanted Gabriel to believe she was.

Clara stared.

“Why?”

Julian shook his head.

“I don't know.”

The security chief entered.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We found something.”

He handed Julian a tablet.

A security recording.

The footage showed Nathaniel entering the underground garage.

With him was Gabriel.

Julian froze.

“They were together.”

Clara watched.

Gabriel handed Nathaniel a folder.

Then they shook hands.

Julian's expression darkened.

“My father was working with Gabriel.”

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

“Maybe he was working against him.”

Julian replayed the footage.

At the end, Nathaniel said something.

The audio was enhanced.

His voice became clear.

“Protect Clara.”

Gabriel answered:

“I will.”

Nathaniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the mansion.

“Protect Julian from what you're about to do.”

Gabriel smiled.

“That may be impossible.”

The recording ended.

Julian stared at the screen.

Then he whispered:

“What is Gabriel planning?”

At 2:17 a.m., Lily disappeared.

The alarm screamed.

Clara ran to her daughter's room.

The bed was empty.

“No.”

She searched beneath the blankets.

Behind the curtains.

Inside the bathroom.

Nothing.

“LILY!”

Julian ran in.

His face changed.

“Where is she?”

Clara couldn't speak.

Then they heard something.

A child's voice.

From the monitor.

“Mommy?”

Clara grabbed it.

“Lily?”

Static.

Then:

“I'm not scared.”

Clara's heart shattered.

“Where are you?”

A man's voice answered.

Gabriel.

“She's with me.”

Julian grabbed the monitor.

“You touch my daughter—”

Gabriel interrupted.

“I haven't harmed her.”

“Bring her back.”

“No.”

Julian's fists clenched.

“Then I'll find you.”

“I know.”

“You're dead if you hurt her.”

Gabriel laughed softly.

“Still the same man.”

“What does that mean?”

“You think everything can be solved with power.”

Julian's voice lowered.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Your daughter?”

Gabriel corrected him.

“She's mine.”

Clara grabbed the monitor.

“Gabriel!”

Silence.

Then his voice softened.

“Clara.”

“Bring her back.”

“You know where to find me.”

“The Villasenor estate.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where it started.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“The chapel.”

Gabriel didn't answer.

She knew.

Julian looked at her.

“We're going.”

The old Villasenor estate had been abandoned for sixteen years.

No electricity.

No security.

No staff.

Only broken windows and overgrown gardens.

The chapel stood at the edge of the property.

Its doors were unlocked.

Clara walked inside.

Julian followed.

The room smelled of dust and rain.

At the altar sat Lily.

Alive.

Unharmed.

Her stuffed rabbit was beside her.

Clara rushed forward.

“Lily!”

The child ran into her arms.

“Mommy!”

Clara held her tightly.

Julian knelt beside them.

“Are you okay?”

Lily nodded.

“He gave me cookies.”

Julian stared.

“Who?”

Lily pointed toward the shadows.

“Grandpa.”

Clara froze.

“Grandpa?”

A man stepped into the light.

Gabriel.

Clara's breathing stopped.

For the first time, she saw him clearly.

He was older than the photographs.

But his eyes were the same.

Her mother's eyes.

Her own eyes.

And Lily's.

Gabriel looked at Clara.

“You've grown.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“You watched me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew where I was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what Victoria did.”

“Yes.”

“You let her hurt me.”

Gabriel's face remained calm.

“I let her believe she had won.”

Clara slapped him.

The sound echoed through the chapel.

Julian didn't stop her.

Gabriel touched his cheek.

“I deserved that.”

“You deserved worse.”

“I know.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I protected you.”

“You imprisoned me.”

“No.”

“Then why didn't you save me?”

Gabriel looked at Lily.

“Because if I had taken you out, they would have killed her.”

Clara froze.

“Who?”

Gabriel looked toward Julian.

“The people who created the Black Rose.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Who?”

Gabriel smiled sadly.

“Your family.”

Julian's face hardened.

“My family?”

“Not your father.”

“Then who?”

Gabriel pointed toward the chapel floor.

“Underneath us.”

They lifted the old stone.

A staircase appeared.

Clara stared into the darkness.

Gabriel handed Julian a flashlight.

“Your grandfather built the room.”

Julian looked at him.

“And my father?”

“He knew it existed.”

“Did he use it?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“To bury people who knew too much.”

Clara shivered.

They descended.

At the bottom was a room filled with boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Medical files.

Birth certificates.

Death certificates.

A hidden history of the Vance and Sterling families.

Clara picked up a file.

Her mother's name.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Her mother.

Pregnant.

Beside her stood Nathaniel.

And behind them...

Gabriel.

Clara's hands shook.

Then she saw another photograph.

Two newborn babies.

One had a bracelet marked C.

The other L.

Clara stared.

“C and L.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Clara and Lily.”

Clara turned toward him.

“So Lily is my sister?”

“Yes.”

Clara's heart stopped.

“But the DNA report said Gabriel was her father.”

“He is.”

Clara looked confused.

“And my father?”

Gabriel answered quietly.

“You are mine too.”

Julian stared.

“But Nathaniel said—”

“Nathaniel is your mother's husband.”

Gabriel looked at Clara.

“He isn't your biological father.”

Clara's world shifted.

“Then why did he say he was?”

“Because he loved your mother.”

“But why hide the truth?”

Gabriel looked away.

“Because the truth would have killed you.”

A sound came from above.

Footsteps.

Julian immediately raised his weapon.

“Someone followed us.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I knew they would.”

“Who?”

Gabriel didn't answer.

The lights suddenly came on.

A voice echoed through the chapel.

“Enough games.”

Victoria.

Clara turned.

Victoria stood at the top of the stairs.

Her face was bruised.

Her hands were cuffed.

But she was smiling.

Beside her stood Martin.

Alive.

And behind him stood Nathaniel.

Julian stared.

“Father?”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“I told you to stay away.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You lied to me.”

“I had to.”

“You helped Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him disappear.”

“Yes.”

“You helped hide Clara.”

Nathaniel's voice broke.

“Yes.”

Clara stared at him.

“Why?”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Because your mother begged me.”

Clara froze.

“My mother?”

“She knew Gabriel was being hunted.”

“By whom?”

Nathaniel looked toward Victoria.

“By the people she joined.”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Nathaniel continued.

“Your mother joined the Black Rose to destroy it from within.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“She was a member?”

“Yes.”

“She betrayed them.”

“Yes.”

“And they killed her.”

“No.”

Nathaniel shook his head.

“They tried.”

Clara whispered:

“Then who killed her?”

Nathaniel looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“I did.”

The chapel went silent.

Clara stepped backward.

“No.”

Gabriel's voice broke.

“She was dying.”

“You killed my mother?”

“She asked me to.”

“No.”

“She knew the Black Rose would torture her.”

“No!”

“She begged me to end it.”

Clara covered her ears.

“Stop.”

Gabriel continued.

“I held her hand.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“And I promised to protect you.”

Clara cried.

“You failed.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I did.”

Victoria suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You're all so pathetic.”

Julian stepped toward her.

“What?”

“You think you've found the truth.”

She smiled.

“You haven't.”

Clara looked at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria looked at Lily.

“The little girl isn't the heir.”

Gabriel's face changed.

Victoria smiled wider.

“The real heir is still missing.”

Clara froze.

“What?”

Victoria laughed.

“You really believed there were two babies.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“What did you do?”

Victoria looked at her.

“I switched them.”

Silence.

Clara's face went white.

“Where is my sister?”

Victoria smiled.

“She's been beside you this entire time.”

Clara looked at Lily.

The little girl stared back.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed at Lily.

“That's not your sister.”

Clara's heart stopped.

Victoria whispered:

“That's Gabriel's granddaughter.”

Julian looked confused.

“Then who is Clara's sister?”

Victoria's smile became almost cruel.

“You've been looking at her every day.”

Everyone froze.

Clara slowly turned toward Evelyn.

Evelyn's face had gone white.

“No.”

Victoria laughed.

“Ask the doctor.”

Clara stared at Evelyn.

“What does she mean?”

Evelyn began crying.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

Evelyn couldn't speak.

Clara stepped closer.

“WHO IS MY SISTER?”

Evelyn finally whispered:

“Me.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Julian stared.

Gabriel looked devastated.

Victoria smiled.

And then every light in the chapel went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Someone screamed.

When the emergency lights returned...

Gabriel was gone.

Lily was gone.

And Clara was standing alone beside Evelyn.

Holding a single piece of paper.

On it were seven words:

THE REAL HEIR IS NOT LILY.

May you like

And beneath those words...

was Clara's own name.
