Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Thought Emily Was Alone

Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Thought Emily Was Alone
The phone slipped from Emily's trembling fingers.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
The doctor stood beside the examination bed, frozen.
The woman in pink stared at Emily as though she had suddenly become someone else.
And the nurse near the door looked down at the floor, refusing to meet anyone's eyes.
Then the elevator at the end of the hallway opened.
Three hospital security officers stepped out first.
Behind them came a tall man in a dark charcoal suit.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
He walked without hurry, but every person in the corridor instinctively moved aside.
The woman in pink went pale.
“No…”
The man stopped directly in front of the examination room.
“Where is Emily?”
His voice was quiet.
The doctor swallowed.
“Mr. Raymond…”
“Where is my niece?”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Uncle Raymond.”
He turned.
The moment he saw her sitting on the examination bed, one hand protecting her stomach, the calm expression disappeared.
He crossed the room in three steps.
“Emily.”
She reached for him.
Raymond took her hand.
“What happened?”
Emily looked at the woman in pink.
Then at the doctor.
Then back at Raymond.
“They tried to make me leave.”
Raymond's jaw tightened.
“Who?”
Emily pointed.
“Her.”
The woman in pink immediately stepped forward.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Raymond didn't look at her.
He looked at the doctor.
“Did she touch Emily?”
The doctor hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Raymond finally turned.
The woman in pink forced a smile.
“Mr. Raymond, you don't understand—”
“I asked a question.”
She swallowed.
“I was only trying to help.”
“Did you touch her?”
“I—”
“Did you?”
The woman looked away.
“Yes.”
Raymond nodded once.
“Security.”
Two officers stepped forward.
The woman immediately backed away.
“Wait. You can't do this.”
Raymond's voice remained cold.
“Take her to the administrative office.”
She stared at him.
“You can't order me around.”
“I own the hospital.”
Silence.
The woman looked at the doctor.
Then at the nurses.
Then back at Raymond.
“I didn't know.”
“That is your problem.”
Emily watched as security escorted the woman away.
For the first time in hours, she felt like she could breathe.
Raymond sat beside her.
His hand remained around hers.
“Are you hurt?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“Your stomach?”
“A little tight.”
Raymond immediately looked at the doctor.
“Check her.”
The doctor nodded.
“Of course.”
Raymond's expression hardened.
“And this time, I want an honest examination.”
The doctor looked down.
“Yes, sir.”
Emily noticed.
There was fear in his eyes.
Not fear of her.
Fear of Raymond.
She suddenly realized something was terribly wrong.
“Uncle?”
Raymond looked at her.
“Hmm?”
“Why is everyone so afraid of you?”
He gave her a tired smile.
“Because I ask questions people don't want to answer.”
The ultrasound room was prepared.
Emily lay back while the technician carefully examined her.
Raymond stood behind the glass.
He refused to leave.
The doctor studied the monitor.
“Heartbeat is stable.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Relief washed through her.
“And the baby?”
“Moving normally.”
Raymond finally exhaled.
Emily looked at him.
He was still watching the monitor.
His face had softened.
“You really were scared.”
Raymond smiled faintly.
“Of course I was.”
“You didn't even know what happened.”
“I knew you called me.”
He looked at her.
“You don't call me during the day unless something is wrong.”
Emily's eyes filled again.
“I thought nobody would come.”
Raymond's expression changed.
“Why would you think that?”
“Because she told me nobody cared.”
Raymond's jaw tightened.
“Emily.”
She looked at him.
“Don't ever believe that again.”
After the examination, Raymond asked everyone to leave.
The room became quiet.
Emily sat against the pillows.
Raymond pulled a chair beside the bed.
“Tell me everything.”
Emily hesitated.
“I don't know where to start.”
“Start with her.”
“The woman in pink?”
“Yes.”
“She came this morning.”
“Why?”
“She said she was a relative.”
“Whose?”
“She wouldn't tell me.”
Raymond frowned.
“What did she want?”
“She wanted me to sign something.”
“What?”
“I don't know.”
“You didn't read it?”
“She grabbed it away before I could.”
Raymond's eyes narrowed.
“What happened next?”
“She told me I had no right to be here.”
“You are a patient.”
“I know.”
“She said the baby wasn't my concern.”
Raymond became completely still.
“What exactly did she say?”
Emily looked down.
“She said I should stop pretending this baby belonged to me.”
Silence.
Raymond slowly stood.
“Did she know about the baby's father?”
Emily nodded.
“She knew his name.”
Raymond looked at her.
“Who?”
Emily didn't answer.
“Emily.”
She took a shaky breath.
“Daniel.”
Raymond's face changed.
He had heard the name before.
Once.
Only once.
Three months earlier.
Emily had refused to explain who Daniel was.
Now Raymond understood that the secret was bigger than he had imagined.
“Is Daniel the father?”
Emily looked at him.
“Yes.”
Raymond sat back down.
“Then why is that woman interested in your baby?”
“I don't know.”
Raymond studied her face.
Emily was lying.
Not well.
But she was lying.
“Emily.”
She looked away.
“There's something you're not telling me.”
She remained silent.
Raymond waited.
He had learned long ago that silence could reveal more than questions.
Finally, Emily whispered:
“Daniel's family doesn't want me to have this baby.”
“Why?”
“Because of who the baby is.”
Raymond frowned.
“Who is the baby?”
Emily looked at her stomach.
Then whispered:
“An heir.”
Raymond stared at her.
“To what?”
Emily shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“Daniel never told me everything.”
“What did he tell you?”
“That his family has money.”
Raymond almost laughed.
“Emily, I know Daniel's family.”
She looked up.
“You do?”
“I know enough.”
“How much?”
“Enough to know that if they want your child, this isn't about money.”
Emily's face went pale.
“Then what is it about?”
Raymond didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the city continued moving.
Ambulances arrived.
Patients entered.
Visitors walked through the lobby.
Life continued as if nothing had happened.
But inside that room, Raymond understood something.
Emily had not accidentally become the target of a family dispute.
Someone had deliberately put her in danger.
And they had done it inside his hospital.
That meant someone had access.
Someone powerful.
Someone who wasn't afraid of him.
Yet.
A knock came at the door.
A security officer entered.
“Mr. Raymond.”
“What?”
“We checked the woman.”
“And?”
“She gave us a name.”
Raymond waited.
“Victoria Hale.”
Emily looked confused.
“Who is that?”
The officer handed Raymond a file.
Raymond opened it.
His face changed.
Emily noticed immediately.
“What?”
Raymond didn't answer.
“Uncle?”
He looked at her.
“This isn't the first time Victoria Hale has been involved with you.”
Emily's eyes widened.
“What do you mean?”
Raymond turned the file around.
Inside was a photograph.
Emily stared.
It showed her outside a courthouse six months earlier.
Standing beside Daniel.
But that wasn't what frightened her.
Behind them, in the background, stood Victoria.
Watching.
Emily whispered:
“I've never seen her before.”
Raymond nodded.
“I believe you.”
He turned another page.
A second photograph.
Victoria entering Emily's apartment building.
Three months earlier.
A third.
Victoria standing outside Emily's workplace.
Two months earlier.
A fourth.
Victoria sitting in a restaurant across from Daniel.
Emily's face went white.
“Daniel knows her.”
“Yes.”
“He lied to me.”
“Apparently.”
Emily's hands began shaking.
“Why?”
Raymond closed the file.
“That is what we're going to find out.”
In the administrative office, Victoria sat with her arms crossed.
Two security officers stood outside.
The doctor was there too.
He looked nervous.
Raymond entered.
Victoria smiled.
“You're making a huge mistake.”
Raymond sat across from her.
“I make mistakes.”
He placed the file on the table.
“But not very often.”
Victoria looked at the photographs.
Her smile disappeared.
“You've been following my niece.”
“I was concerned about her.”
“You entered her building.”
“I had business there.”
“You met Daniel.”
She said nothing.
Raymond leaned forward.
“Who sent you?”
Victoria laughed.
“You really think I'm going to tell you?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I think you're going to tell me because you're about to realize the person who hired you doesn't have the power to protect you anymore.”
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
“You don't know who you're dealing with.”
Raymond nodded.
“Then tell me.”
She leaned closer.
“You should ask Emily what she did.”
Raymond's expression hardened.
“What did she do?”
Victoria smiled.
“She stole something.”
“What?”
Victoria said nothing.
Raymond stood.
“Security.”
The officers entered.
“Take her downstairs.”
Victoria immediately stood.
“You can't keep me here.”
“No.”
Raymond looked at her.
“But I can keep you from approaching my niece again.”
As she was escorted out, Victoria shouted:
“Ask Emily about the contract!”
Emily heard it from the hallway.
Her face went pale.
“What contract?”
Raymond turned toward her.
“That's what I'm wondering.”
Back inside the room, Emily sat silently.
Raymond placed the file in front of her.
“Do you know what contract she's talking about?”
Emily stared at it.
“No.”
“Think.”
“I am.”
“Did Daniel ever ask you to sign anything?”
Emily's eyes moved.
Raymond noticed.
“Yes.”
She whispered.
“Once.”
“What?”
“He said it was a marriage agreement.”
Raymond frowned.
“Did you sign?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because the document said I would have no financial claim against his family.”
Raymond nodded.
“Anything else?”
Emily hesitated.
“It said the baby would be placed under a family trust.”
Raymond's eyes hardened.
“Whose trust?”
“I don't know.”
“Emily.”
She looked at him.
“Blackwell.”
Raymond went completely silent.
Emily noticed.
“Why?”
He didn't answer.
“Uncle Raymond?”
He slowly closed his eyes.
The Blackwell family.
One of the most powerful private families in the state.
A family that owned banks, construction companies, pharmaceutical investments—and had spent decades avoiding public attention.
Raymond knew them.
Too well.
And he knew one other thing.
The Blackwell family had never allowed an outsider to inherit anything.
Not without a reason.
The door opened.
A nurse rushed inside.
“Mr. Raymond!”
“What?”
“We found something in the trash.”
She handed him a sealed plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a torn piece of paper.
Raymond opened the bag carefully.
It was part of the document Victoria had tried to make Emily sign.
One sentence remained visible.
Upon delivery, the child shall be transferred to the custody of the Blackwell Family Trust…
Emily stared.
Her face went white.
“No.”
Raymond folded the paper.
“Emily.”
“They want my baby.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Raymond looked at her.
“I don't know yet.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Then find out.”
Raymond nodded.
“I will.”
She grabbed his hand.
“Promise me.”
Raymond squeezed it.
“I promise.”
That evening, Raymond stood alone in his office.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
On his desk lay three files.
Victoria Hale.
Daniel Blackwell.
The Blackwell Family Trust.
He opened the third.
The first page contained a photograph of Daniel's grandfather.
The second contained financial records.
The third contained a legal document.
Raymond stopped.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he read the final clause.
His face went completely pale.
There was a condition.
A condition that explained everything.
If Daniel died before his child reached adulthood, control of the Blackwell fortune would pass to the child's mother.
Unless the mother was deemed legally unfit.
Raymond whispered:
“That's what they're doing.”
They weren't trying to take the baby.
They were trying to destroy Emily first.
Discredit her.
Prove she was unstable.
Make her look violent.
Then take custody.
The hospital incident had been the beginning.
And the doctor had been part of it.
Raymond looked toward the security monitor.
He saw the doctor leaving the building.
“Stop him.”
Security moved immediately.
Raymond picked up his phone.
He called Emily.
She answered.
“Uncle?”
“Emily, listen to me carefully.”
“What?”
“Do not trust anyone who comes into your room unless I personally authorize them.”
She became silent.
“Why?”
“Because this was never about an argument.”
“What is it about?”
Raymond looked at the Blackwell file.
“They are trying to take your baby.”
Emily's breathing stopped.
“And they may have someone inside this hospital helping them.”
Across the hospital, the doctor stepped into the parking garage.
He looked around nervously.
Then pulled out his phone.
“I failed.”
A voice answered.
“You were supposed to make her look unstable.”
“I couldn't.”
“You had one job.”
“She called Raymond.”
Silence.
Then the voice became colder.
“Then we move to the next phase.”
The doctor swallowed.
“What is the next phase?”
A pause.
“Make sure Emily never leaves the hospital with that baby.”
The call ended.
The doctor stared at his phone.
Behind him, a security officer stepped from the shadows.
“Doctor?”
He turned.
“Yes?”
“You're coming with us.”
His face went white.
“Why?”
The officer held up a recording device.
“Because we heard everything.”
And upstairs, unaware of what had just happened, Emily placed one hand over her stomach.
For the first time, she understood the truth.
The woman in pink had never believed Emily was alone.
She had simply believed nobody powerful enough to stop her would come.
She had been wrong.
May you like
But Emily was about to discover that Raymond's arrival had not ended the danger.
It had only forced the people behind it to reveal how far they were willing to go.
