Chapter 9 — The Trap Inside the Estate

Chapter 9 — The Trap Inside the Estate
The first sign that someone had entered the estate was not a broken lock.
It was the silence.
At 2:17 on a Thursday morning, Luca Costello woke to a house that was too quiet.
For twelve years, silence had been the background noise of his life.
He knew the ordinary sounds of the estate—the elevator cables settling inside the walls, the low hum of the security system, the distant movement of guards changing shifts, the old pipes clicking whenever the heating system adjusted.
He knew the sound of Elena closing the laundry-room door.
He knew Maya's footsteps.
Light.
Uneven.
Fast.
He could recognize them from the other end of the house.
Tonight, there were none.
Luca stared into the darkness of his bedroom.
Then his phone vibrated.
One message.
From Gabriel, his head of security.
Do not leave your room.
Luca's expression hardened.
A second message appeared.
We may have a breach.
Luca reached for the bedside lamp.
Before he could turn it on, something moved beneath his bedroom door.
A shadow.
Then it disappeared.
Luca's hand tightened around the edge of his blanket.
For years, people had treated him as a man who could not defend himself because he could not stand.
They had forgotten something important.
He had built an empire from a wheelchair.
His legs might have been useless.
His mind was not.
He reached for the emergency panel beside his bed.
The screen was black.
No response.
Luca stared at it.
Someone had disabled the internal system.
Not the cameras.
Not the outer gates.
The internal system.
Someone with access.
Someone who knew exactly where the emergency controls were.
His phone vibrated again.
This time, the message was from an unknown number.
You should have stayed broken.
Luca read it once.
Then again.
His blood went cold.
Not from fear.
Recognition.
Someone knew.
Someone knew about the tests.
Someone knew the paralysis had been induced.
And someone knew he was getting closer.
Then he heard a child's voice from the hallway.
"Dad?"
Luca froze.
Maya.
He reached for the phone.
"Maya?"
No answer.
He pushed himself toward the bedroom door.
For twelve years, every movement had been calculated.
Tonight, he moved faster than he had moved in years.
He opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
"Maya?"
A soft sound came from the staircase.
Then a small figure appeared.
Maya stood halfway down the stairs, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Her face was pale.
Luca's heart slammed against his ribs.
"Why are you awake?"
She pointed toward the kitchen.
"There was a man."
Luca's voice became dangerously calm.
"What man?"
"I don't know."
"Did he see you?"
She shook her head.
"He told someone on the phone that they needed to make you look like you were sick again."
Luca went completely still.
Elena appeared behind Maya.
Her face changed when she saw Luca.
"What happened?"
Luca looked at her.
"Get Maya into the panic room."
Elena immediately understood.
She grabbed her daughter's hand.
"But—"
"Now."
They moved.
Luca followed.
Halfway down the hall, the lights came on.
Every light.
At once.
The estate flooded with white illumination.
Then the front doors opened.
Gabriel rushed inside with two armed guards.
"Mr. Costello."
Luca looked at him.
"Where were you?"
Gabriel stopped.
For the first time since Luca had known him, the man hesitated.
"Outside."
"Why?"
"We lost internal communications."
Luca looked at the security team.
Then at the open front doors.
Then at Maya.
"Who has access to the estate control system?"
Gabriel swallowed.
"Four people."
"Names."
"Me. You. Mr. Vincent. And—"
He stopped.
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"And?"
"Your brother."
The room went silent.
Elena's fingers tightened around Maya's shoulder.
Luca said nothing.
Because his brother had been dead for nine years.
Or so everyone believed.
The hidden room was behind the library.
Only five people knew it existed.
Luca.
Gabriel.
His father.
His former attorney.
And the man Luca had spent twelve years believing had betrayed him.
His older brother, Matteo.
Maya sat on the floor with Elena while Luca examined the security monitor.
The screens were coming back online one by one.
Garden.
Garage.
Front gate.
West corridor.
Nothing.
No intruder.
No broken window.
No forced entrance.
Gabriel looked confused.
"There's nobody on the cameras."
Luca stared at the screen.
"Exactly."
Elena looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means whoever did this didn't need to break in."
He turned toward Gabriel.
"They were already inside."
A sound came from the hallway.
Three knocks.
Everyone froze.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Maya whispered:
"Dad?"
Luca looked at her.
"Stay with your mother."
The door opened.
No one was there.
Only an envelope lying on the floor.
Gabriel stepped forward.
Luca stopped him.
"Don't touch it."
Gabriel looked down.
The envelope had Luca's name written across it.
In handwriting Luca recognized immediately.
His father's handwriting.
Impossible.
His father had been dead for seventeen years.
Luca stared at the envelope.
Then at Elena.
"Get Maya out of this room."
"Where?"
"Anywhere except here."
Elena understood.
She pulled Maya toward the rear exit.
Maya looked back.
"Dad."
Luca met her eyes.
"I'll come find you."
"You promise?"
He smiled.
"I promise."
She disappeared through the door.
Only then did Luca allow Gabriel to pick up the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Luca looked at it.
His face changed.
It showed him twelve years earlier.
In a hospital bed.
Unconscious.
A man stood beside him.
The image had been taken from inside the hospital room.
The man was partially hidden by shadow.
But Luca recognized the watch.
The same silver watch Matteo had worn every day.
Underneath the photograph was a note.
The poison did not begin at the hospital.
Luca's breathing stopped.
Gabriel read the next line.
It began in this house.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
Ask Elena what was hidden beneath the west staircase.
Luca turned toward the hallway.
Elena was gone.
"Maya?"
No answer.
"Elena!"
Silence.
Luca's blood turned to ice.
Gabriel reached for his weapon.
"She's gone."
Luca stared toward the west wing.
The oldest part of the estate.
The part nobody used anymore.
The part his father had sealed before his death.
The part Luca had never thought to question.
Until tonight.
"Take me there."
Gabriel stared at him.
"Sir—"
"Take me there."
The west staircase had not been used in fourteen years.
Dust covered the railing.
The carpet smelled old.
Luca remembered walking there as a child.
His father had once told him never to go beyond the fourth step.
He had never explained why.
Gabriel stopped near the bottom.
"There."
A faint scratch marked the wall.
Luca leaned forward.
"Open it."
Gabriel examined the panel.
"There isn't a handle."
"There doesn't need to be."
Luca reached beneath the railing.
His fingers found a tiny metal switch.
He pressed it.
A section of wall moved.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
And inside the passage were shelves.
Documents.
Photographs.
Medical files.
Bank statements.
And one red folder.
Luca stared at it.
His name was written on the cover.
Not Luca Costello.
His birth name.
Luca Reyes.
His father's original surname.
Gabriel whispered:
"What is this?"
Luca opened the folder.
The first page was dated twelve years earlier.
SUBJECT: LUCA REYES COSTELLO
OBJECTIVE: PERMANENT DISABILITY
Luca felt the room tilt.
He turned the page.
A payment record.
Then another.
Then another.
Names.
Companies.
Doctors.
A private laboratory.
And finally—
A signature.
Matteo Costello.
Luca closed his eyes.
For twelve years, he had suspected his brother.
Now he had proof.
Or something designed to look exactly like proof.
Because beneath Matteo's signature was another document.
A handwritten note.
If Luca survives, initiate Phase Two.
Gabriel stared at him.
"Phase Two?"
Luca turned the page.
There was only one sentence.
Make him believe Elena is responsible.
Luca stopped breathing.
Then he heard footsteps behind them.
Slow.
Measured.
Familiar.
He turned.
A man stood at the entrance of the passage.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Luca stared at him.
"Matteo."
The man smiled.
"You were never supposed to find this room."
Luca's hand tightened against the wheelchair.
"Where is Elena?"
Matteo's smile disappeared.
"Safe."
"Maya?"
"Safe."
"Then why are you here?"
Matteo looked at the documents.
"Because you finally became dangerous enough to deserve the truth."
Luca stared at his brother.
"You poisoned me."
"No."
"Your signature is here."
"I signed nothing."
"Then someone forged it."
"Exactly."
Luca felt a terrible realization forming.
Matteo stepped closer.
"You've spent twelve years thinking someone wanted your empire."
He shook his head.
"They didn't."
"What did they want?"
Matteo looked directly into Luca's eyes.
"You."
A pause.
"Not your money."
"Not your companies."
"You."
Luca's face hardened.
"Why?"
Matteo's expression became something close to grief.
"Because our father knew what you would become."
Luca said nothing.
"He knew you would expose him."
"Expose him for what?"
Matteo looked toward the hidden files.
Then whispered:
"For everything."
Before Luca could respond, the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the passage.
Gabriel dropped to the floor.
Luca stared into the darkness.
Then someone whispered from behind him.
"Dad?"
Maya.
His heart stopped.
She was standing at the entrance.
And behind her stood Elena.
Both were staring at him.
But Elena's face was terrified.
Because the person holding a gun against Maya's back was not Matteo.
It was Gabriel.
The man Luca had trusted for twelve years.
The man who had told him not to leave his room.
The man who had brought him to the hidden passage.
Gabriel smiled.
"Now you understand."
Luca looked at him.
"What do you want?"
Gabriel pressed the gun closer to Maya.
"Exactly what your father wanted twelve years ago."
"What?"
Gabriel's smile widened.
May you like
"For you to disappear."
And then the hidden door slammed shut behind them.
