Chapter 1: The Finger That Moved

"Mom!"

Leo's scream shattered the silence.

His small hand tightened around mine.

"I saw it! Dad, I saw it! She moved!"

Marcus spun toward the bed.

For the first time, genuine panic flashed across his face.

"Nonsense," he snapped.

But Victoria had seen it too.

The color drained from her face as she stared at my right hand.

Another twitch.

Tiny.

Unmistakable.

My body felt like concrete, but somewhere deep inside, I was fighting my way back.

The monitor beside me began to change.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Faster.

Stronger.

A nurse rushed into the room.

Then another.

"What happened?"

"I think she's responding!"

Within seconds, doctors flooded the room.

Marcus stepped backward.

Victoria looked ready to faint.

The lead physician shined a light into my eyes.

"Valerie, if you can hear me, squeeze my hand."

Every muscle screamed in protest.

But this time...

My fingers moved.

A weak squeeze.

The room erupted.

"Oh my God."

"She's conscious."

"Call neurology."

"Now!"

Leo burst into tears.

"I told you!" he cried.

"I told everyone she was still here!"

As the medical team surrounded me, I caught one final glimpse of Marcus.

His expression wasn't relief.

It was terror.
