Chapter 2: The Promise

Chapter 2: The Promise
The morning rush had just begun.
Coffee cups clinked against saucers.
Waitresses hurried between booths.
The bell above the diner's front door jingled as a sleek black limousine pulled to the curb.
Every conversation inside slowed.
The chef, Samuel Brooks, wiped his hands on his apron and glanced through the window.
"Must be lost," one customer muttered.
The rear door of the limousine opened.
A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out.
Behind him came two security officers.
Then a third man emerged.
Well-dressed.
Confident.
Perhaps thirty years old.
He paused on the sidewalk and looked at the faded sign above the entrance.
Brooks Family Diner.
His eyes softened.
Samuel frowned.
Something about the man's face seemed strangely familiar.
The stranger walked inside.
The entire diner fell silent.
He looked around slowly until his eyes found Samuel.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, the man smiled.
"Good morning, Chef."
Samuel searched his memory.
"I'm sorry... have we met?"
The man reached into his pocket.
Carefully, he placed an old silver coin on the counter.
The same coin.
Worn smooth by twenty years.
Samuel's eyes widened.
"Ethan...?"
The man nodded.
"I told you I'd come back."
Samuel stepped around the counter without another word and hugged him tightly.
"I thought I'd never see you again."
May you like
"You gave a hungry little boy hope," Ethan replied quietly.
"I've carried that breakfast in my heart ever since."
