Chapter 2: The Son She Never Stopped Searching For

Chapter 2: The Son She Never Stopped Searching For
The alley fell silent.
The little girl looked from the frightened boy to her mother, unable to understand why she was crying.
The woman knelt on the cold pavement.
Her hands trembled so violently she could barely lift them.
"No..."
She whispered through tears.
"It can't be."
The boy instinctively stepped backward.
He clutched the sandwich tightly against his chest.
"I'm sorry."
"I didn't steal it."
"I promise."
Those words broke her heart.
She wasn't crying because he had taken food.
She was crying because he believed kindness had to be defended.
"What... what's your name?" she asked softly.
The boy hesitated.
"Ben."
Her breath caught.
"When's your birthday?"
"October fifteenth."
The date hit her like lightning.
Nine years earlier, during a crowded evacuation after a warehouse fire, she had lost her three-year-old son.
His name...
Benjamin.
His birthday...
October fifteenth.
She slowly reached into her purse and pulled out a worn photograph she had carried every day since.
A smiling toddler with bright blue eyes.
The same tiny scar above his right eyebrow.
The same birthmark near his left ear.
The boy stared at the picture.
"That's..."
He touched the scar on his forehead.
"I got this before I can remember."
Tears streamed down the woman's face.
"My baby..."
Before she could move closer, the boy flinched.
"Please don't send me away."
"I'll leave."
"I won't bother you anymore."
She gently shook her head.
"Oh, sweetheart..."
"I've spent nine years trying to find you."
He looked confused.
"You... know me?"
"I never stopped loving you."
For a long moment, neither of them moved.
Then the little girl quietly took her mother's hand...
And placed it into the boy's.
"You found your son."
The boy finally broke.
He threw his arms around the woman.
