Chapter 3: The Cedar Box

Chapter 3: The Cedar Box
Two days after the wedding, Evelyn and Thomas drove to the abandoned lake house.
Dust covered every window.
The attic smelled of cedar and old books.
Behind a loose wooden beam they found exactly what the letter described.
A small cedar box.
Inside were family photographs Evelyn had never seen.
Letters exchanged between her parents before she was born.
A journal her mother had kept during the final year of her life.
There was one more envelope addressed simply:
For Evelyn—When You're Ready.
She opened it with shaking hands.
The letter wasn't filled with shocking secrets.
It wasn't about hidden fortunes or long-lost relatives.
It was about forgiveness.
Her mother wrote about knowing life could end unexpectedly.
She hoped Evelyn would never measure people by success, wealth, or appearances.
She hoped her daughter would choose kindness, even when it was difficult.
Near the end, one paragraph stood out.

"If you're reading this, then someone helped you find what love had hidden for you. Don't spend your life asking how that happened. Spend it becoming the kind of person who helps others find hope too."
Evelyn quietly wiped away her tears.
