Chapter 4: The Little Girl's Answer

Months later, Evelyn met Amelia and her parents for lunch.

She finally asked the question that had haunted her.

"Do you remember the woman you spoke to?"

Amelia thought for a long moment.

"I remember she was smiling."

"What else?"

"She told me you missed your mom."

"And?"

The little girl smiled.

"She said your mom never stopped loving you."

Her parents exchanged embarrassed looks.

"We've never mentioned your mother to Amelia," her father admitted. "We still can't explain how she knew any of those details."

Evelyn looked down at the repaired locket resting against her heart.

For years, she had believed it held only two tiny photographs.

Instead, it had carried one last gift from her mother—waiting patiently until the right moment to be discovered.

Whether Amelia's words could ever be explained no longer mattered.

Some mysteries, Evelyn realized, did not need solving.
