CHAPTER 2: THE LUNCHBOX THAT NO ONE EXPECTED
The little girl didn't step back.
She stepped forward.
One small barefoot step echoed across the polished Calacatta marble.
The manager folded his arms.
"I said this is private property."
She nodded politely.
"I know."
His eyebrows lifted.
"Then why are you still here?"
The girl slowly raised the dented lunchbox with both hands.
"I'm here to bring lunch."
A few guests laughed quietly.
The manager forced a smile.
"For who?"
"My daddy."
The laughter faded.
The manager looked around the lobby.
"There are no guests waiting for you."
"He isn't a guest."
She smiled.
"He works here."
The manager glanced toward the concierge desk.
"What's his name?"
The little girl answered without hesitation.
"Mr. Jonathan Hayes."
Silence.
Several employees exchanged nervous looks.
Jonathan Hayes wasn't a waiter.
He wasn't security.
He wasn't part of housekeeping.
Jonathan Hayes owned the Hayes Grand Hotel Group.
The billionaire whose portrait hung behind the reception desk.
The manager laughed awkwardly.
"Mr. Hayes doesn't have a daughter."
The little girl looked confused.
"My mommy said he does."
She slowly opened the lunchbox.
Inside wasn't food.
Wrapped carefully inside a faded blue towel rested an old silver wristwatch.
Its cracked leather strap had been stitched by hand.
The manager's smile disappeared.
He knew that watch.
Every executive knew it.
Jonathan Hayes had searched for it for nearly a year before giving up.
"My mommy fixed it," the girl whispered.
"She said Daddy would know it belongs to him."
