Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Uniform

The wealthy guests exchanged confused looks.

One whispered,

"Isn't she just one of the catering staff?"

The man finally stood.

"My name is Victor Lang."

"I'm the executor of the Ashton Family Trust."

The bride frowned.

"So what?"

Victor looked around the ballroom.

"You've all assumed this woman works here because she has no other choice."

"She doesn't."

He turned toward Leo's mother.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"I believe it's time."

With trembling hands, she slowly removed the plain catering jacket she had been wearing.

Beneath it was a tailored navy dress.

Simple.

Elegant.

The room fell silent again.

Victor continued.

"Three months ago, the late Eleanor Ashton named Emma Carter as the sole guardian of her grandson..."

"...and temporary trustee of the Ashton Foundation until Leo reaches adulthood."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

The bride staggered backward.

"The Ashton Foundation?"

Victor nodded.

"The same foundation that owns this hotel."

"...and nearly forty percent of the companies represented in this room."

The guests suddenly understood.

The maid they had mocked...

Was never a maid at all.

She had volunteered to work anonymously among the staff for several weeks at Eleanor Ashton's request.

It was meant to teach Leo humility before he inherited enormous responsibility.
