Chapter 1: The Bracelet No One Was Supposed to See
The mansion fell silent.
Crystal fragments glittered across the marble floor.
Sophie's cheek still burned where Victoria had slapped her.
"I said I didn't touch the table," Sophie whispered.
Victoria pointed toward the door.
"Then leave."
"You don't belong in this house."
Before Sophie could move, Richard stepped forward.
His eyes never left the silver bracelet on her wrist.
"Where..."
His voice shook.
"...did you get that?"
Sophie instinctively covered it with her other hand.
"It belonged to my mother."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"It's just an old bracelet."
Richard ignored her.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"I had this made thirty years ago."
Every guest stopped talking.
Victoria's smile faded.
Sophie frowned.
"My mother always said it came from this house."
Richard's face turned white.
"What was your mother's name?"
There was a long silence.
"Anna."
The name hit Richard like a physical blow.
His wine glass slipped from his fingers and shattered beside the crystal tray.
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
May you like
"Richard..."
But he wasn't listening anymore.
