PART 4 — The Altar Collapse

PART 4 — The Altar Collapse
I stepped forward.
Not dramatically.
Not yet.
Just one step.
The closer I got, the clearer everything became.
The ring on my finger suddenly felt heavy.
Not sentimental.
Contractual.
Thomas saw me and smiled wider.
The kind of smile people use when they believe they’ve already won.
Then he saw my face.
And something shifted.
A flicker.
He leaned slightly toward the officiant, still smiling for the crowd.
But his eyes were no longer warm.
They were calculating.
“Claire,” he said softly as I reached the altar.
“What are you doing?”
I looked at him.
At the man everyone trusted.
At the man I almost trusted.
And I did something I had never done in my entire life.
I didn’t ask a question.
I stated a fact.
“I know.”
Silence hit the chapel instantly.
Lena stepped forward beside me, holding up her phone.
“The truth is already out,” she said.
A murmur rippled through the guests.
Thomas didn’t move.
Not yet.
But his hand tightened ever so slightly around the edge of the lectern.
A tell.
A crack.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at,” he said quietly.
I laughed once.
Small.
Sharp.
“I understand it perfectly.”
I turned to the officiant.
“Don’t sign anything.”
Gasps spread through the crowd.
My father stood up halfway.
“Claire—what is going on?”
I didn’t look away from Thomas.
“Ask him,” I said.
“Ask him what happened in Zurich.”
That did it.
For the first time, his smile broke.
Not fully.
Just enough to show the truth underneath.
Cold.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
PART 5 — The Plan Unravels
The chapel doors opened.
Two men in suits entered quietly.
Not guests.
Not relatives.
One of them held a badge.
The other held a folder.
Thomas finally exhaled.
Slowly.
Like a man accepting an outcome he had already prepared for.
“You really shouldn’t have done that,” he said to me.
I felt my hands stop shaking.
For the first time all morning.
“I know.”
The investigator stepped forward.
“Mr. Keller,” he said, using the name from the documents, “you’re being placed under federal financial fraud investigation.”
The crowd erupted.
Thomas didn’t run.
That was the most terrifying part.
He just looked at me.
Like I was the only variable he hadn’t accounted for.
“I was going to make you wealthy,” he said quietly.
I shook my head.
“No,” I replied.
“You were going to make yourself rich.”
The investigator moved in.
As Thomas was escorted down the aisle, guests parted in stunned silence.
But just before he disappeared through the doors…
he looked back.
And smiled again.
Different this time.
Not defeated.
Calculated.
As if the real plan…
wasn’t finished.
I felt Lena grab my hand.
“Claire,” she whispered. “What did you just start?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I suddenly understood something far worse than a broken engagement.
He hadn’t been caught.
He had been exposed early.
And men like him…
don’t improvise when they lose.
May you like
They retaliate.
