Chapter 3: The Truth She Buried

Chapter 3: The Truth She Buried

That evening, after I had been sent upstairs, I sat quietly on the staircase listening.

Children aren't supposed to eavesdrop.

But sometimes the truth finds them anyway.

My mother spoke first.

"The accident happened exactly the way the police reported."

"Our car went off the bridge."

"You survived."

David nodded.

"You disappeared."

"They told me they never found your body."

"I searched for years."

She lowered her head.

"They weren't supposed to."

David frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She took a long breath.

"My father arranged everything."

Silence.

"He believed your family would ruin my life."

"He bribed people."

"Changed records."

"Told everyone I was dead."

David stared at her in disbelief.

"You let me mourn you."

"I woke up in another country after months in the hospital."

"I had no passport."

"No money."

"No way to contact you."

"When I finally tried..."

She looked away.

"My father told me you had remarried."

"He said you'd moved on."

May you like

David whispered,

"I never did."
