CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET HE'D HIDDEN FOR YEARS

CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET HE'D HIDDEN FOR YEARS

The detective fast-forwarded.

Everyone watched silently.

Then another piece of footage appeared.

Taken from a different camera near the entrance.

Audio included.

The room filled with Preston's voice.

Minutes before the accusation.

Minutes before the attack.

He stood speaking with Madison's brother.

Laughing.

Drinking champagne.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"I need her out of the picture."

Madison's brother frowned.

"What?"

"Evelyn."

The room became silent.

Even Preston stopped breathing.

He continued on the recording.

"Mom and Dad are updating their estate plan next month."

Madison's brother looked confused.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

Preston laughed.

"If Evelyn gets cut off completely, everything comes to me."

My mother's hand flew to her mouth.

The recording continued.

"And once everyone thinks her daughter is a thief?"

He shrugged.

"No one questions anything."

The detective paused the video.

Nobody moved.

My father looked as though someone had struck him.

Because suddenly this wasn't about a wedding.

Or a phone.

Or a stolen item.

It was about years.

Years of manipulation.

Years of lies.

Years of favoritism built around a son who had learned that consequences never applied to him.

Until now.

The detective finally spoke.

"Mr. Bennett, you intentionally framed a minor child and physically assaulted her."

The handcuffs clicked moments later.

The sound echoed through the room.

Preston looked toward our parents.

Waiting.

Expecting rescue.

Expecting what had always happened.

But this time nobody moved.

May you like

Because the camera had stolen the one thing that always protected him.

The lie.
