CHAPTER 2 — THE PENDANT NO ONE COULD EXPLAIN

The ballroom remained silent.

More than three hundred guests watched as Prince Alexander turned the tiny silver pendant over in his hand.

His fingers trembled.

"I know this piece," he said quietly.

"It belonged to my mother."

A murmur spread through the room.

Lady Victoria stepped forward immediately.

"Alexander, you're mistaken."

"It's just an old necklace."

He ignored her.

Instead, he pressed a hidden latch on the side of the pendant.

Click.

The locket opened.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A younger Queen Eleanor stood smiling beside a little girl no older than five.

On the back, written in elegant handwriting, were four words.

Always find your way home.

Alexander's face turned pale.

"My mother wrote this herself."

Grace could barely breathe.

"I've worn it since I was a child."

Lady Victoria's voice sharpened.

"Enough."

"This woman is trying to deceive the Crown."

But no one was looking at Grace anymore.

They were looking at Victoria.

Because she seemed far more frightened than the woman being accused.

Alexander turned toward the Royal Archivist.

"Bring me the accident records."

"Now."
