CHAPTER 2: The Secret Their Mother Took to Her Grave
The whispers spread through the ballroom like a rising tide.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Daniel Whitmore couldn't take his eyes off Emily.
She looked so ordinary in her black waitress uniform.
Yet there was something painfully familiar about her smile.
The same soft eyes.
The same dimple that appeared only when she tried not to cry.
Features he had seen every day in the mirror without ever questioning where they came from.
Vanessa gently touched his arm.
"Daniel... ask her."
He swallowed hard.
"If what you're saying is true..."
His voice trembled.
"...why didn't our mother ever tell me?"
Emily lowered her eyes.
"Because she wasn't allowed to."
The room fell silent again.
Emily reached into her apron and removed an old envelope, yellow with age.
"My mother gave me this when she was dying."
"She told me never to open it unless I met the Whitmore family."
Daniel carefully unfolded the letter.
It was written in his mother's unmistakable handwriting.
My dearest children,
If you are reading this together, then the truth has finally found you.
Daniel felt tears welling in his eyes.
The letter explained that thirty years earlier, after her husband abandoned the family, she had been unable to care for both children.
Daniel had been taken in by his wealthy paternal grandparents, who demanded complete custody.
They agreed to raise him only if all contact with his younger sister ended forever.
Threatened with losing both children, she made the impossible choice.
She kept Emily.
She let Daniel go.
Not because she loved one more.
Because she hoped both would survive.
At the bottom of the letter was one heartbreaking sentence.
"Please forgive me for choosing your future over my happiness."

Daniel could no longer hold back his tears.
Neither could Emily.
