Leah stood frozen as every pair of eyes turned toward the elderly woman she had just defended.
The man in the tuxedo wrapped a protective arm around the old woman's shoulders before facing the crowd.
"My name is Daniel Whitmore," he said calmly. "And this woman is my mother."
A ripple of shock swept through the guests.
The wealthy woman who had been shouting moments earlier suddenly turned pale.
"I... I didn't know..."
"No," Daniel interrupted. "You didn't care to know."

Leah's heart pounded. She had only stepped in because she couldn't watch someone being humiliated.
She had no idea the frail woman was Eleanor Whitmore—the founder of the Whitmore Foundation, one of the country's largest charitable organizations.
Daniel continued, "Tonight was supposed to be a private test."
The room erupted with whispers.
"My mother insisted on attending this gala dressed simply. She wanted to see how people treated someone they believed had no wealth or influence."
He glanced across the ballroom.
"Many of you failed."
The elderly woman smiled gently at Leah.
