Chapter 2: The Truth Emily Never Told Me

Chapter 2: The Truth Emily Never Told Me

That night, after Leo finally fell asleep, Emily and I sat together in the living room.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Then she whispered,

"I'm sorry."

I stared at her in disbelief.

"Sorry? For what?"

"For making you choose."

I gently held her hands.

"I didn't choose."

"I chose the woman who has been carrying this family every single day."

Tears filled her eyes again.

Then she confessed something that made my stomach turn.

"Your mom told me I wasn't trying hard enough."

I froze.

Emily continued.

"She said when she raised children, she cooked every meal, kept the house spotless, and never complained."

"And when Leo cried..."

Emily's voice cracked.

"...she said I was spoiling him by holding him too much."

I felt sick.

"But that's not the worst part."

She reached into a kitchen drawer and pulled out a notebook.

Every page contained schedules.

Medication times.

Grocery lists.

Doctor appointments.

Cleaning tasks.

Dog walks.

Laundry.

Work deadlines.

Every responsibility had been carefully written down.

Beside each task was one heartbreaking note.

"Asked Mom for help—she said she was tired."

"Asked Sarah to watch Leo for 15 minutes—she said she was busy."

Page after page.

Day after day.

Emily hadn't been exaggerating.

She had been surviving alone while two perfectly capable adults watched.

I closed the notebook.

"I failed you."

She shook her head immediately.

"No."

"You believed them because they're your family."

I took her face gently in my hands.

"You are my family."

"And from today forward, nobody gets access to us unless they bring us peace—not pain."

For the first time in months, Emily smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

May you like

Fragile.

But real.
