Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Front Door

Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Front Door
Nathan carried Emma into the house without another word.
She flinched when he lifted her.
Not because she was hurt.
Because she wasn't used to being carried anymore.
His heart sank.
Mrs. Grayson appeared in the foyer wearing a crisp blouse and an annoyed expression.
"Mr. Holloway," she said. "You're home early."
Nathan looked at her.
"Why was my daughter outside in the rain?"
Mrs. Grayson folded her arms.
"Children need discipline."
"She refused to finish her chores."
Nathan glanced down at Emma.
"Did you refuse?"
Emma shook her head immediately.
"No, Daddy."
"I was just too slow."
Mrs. Grayson smiled.
"She's been very lazy lately."
Nathan knelt in front of his daughter.
"When was the last time you played outside with your friends?"
Emma hesitated.
"I don't remember."
"When was the last time you watched a movie?"
Another pause.
"I only watch after all my work is finished."
"What work?"
The little girl quietly counted on her fingers.
"Cleaning my room."
"Washing dishes."
"Doing laundry."
"Mopping."
"Taking out the trash."
"Cleaning Mrs. Grayson's bathroom."
Nathan's blood ran cold.
His eight-year-old daughter wasn't living like a child.
She was living like unpaid household help.
He stood and faced Mrs. Grayson.
"Pack your things."
She frowned.
"I beg your pardon?"
"You're leaving."
Mrs. Grayson laughed.
"You'll regret firing me."
May you like
Nathan's voice remained calm.
"I regret hiring you."
