CHAPTER 2: The Joke That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2: The Joke That Changed Everything

Graham laughed softly.

"I don't know storms," he told Lily. "I just know they always pass."

Lily nodded as though she had been given the most important secret in the world.

From that day on, whenever she saw Graham, she would ask him if the storms were still far away.

He always answered yes.

He had no idea that the biggest storm of his life was already living under his own roof.

Wedding day arrived beneath a cloudless California sky.

Whitaker Hill looked like something from a magazine. White roses lined every stone path. Crystal chandeliers hung beneath the silk reception tent. Reporters waited outside the gates while celebrities, politicians, and business leaders filled the vineyard with laughter and champagne.

Nora had been working since four that morning.

She helped decorate guest suites, carried floral arrangements, comforted nervous caterers, and somehow still found time to braid Lily's curls before bringing her to the small staff nursery beside the ballroom.

Lily wore pink pajamas decorated with tiny stars.

She hugged Pickle the elephant and promised to be "extra invisible."

Blair had insisted that staff children stay out of sight.

"They're distracting," she had said.

Nora simply nodded.

She needed the job.

The ceremony was flawless.

When Graham kissed Blair, applause echoed across the vineyard.

By evening, the ballroom glittered with music and celebration.

Then dessert arrived.

A towering six-tier wedding cake rolled into the room.

Guests crowded closer with their phones raised.

After the traditional first slice, Blair suddenly smiled at Nora.

"You've worked so hard today," she said sweetly.

"Come here."

Several guests applauded what appeared to be a generous gesture.

Nora hesitated.

Before she could react, Blair whispered something into Graham's ear.

He looked uncomfortable.

She laughed.

"Come on," she teased loudly. "It's just a wedding joke."

One of Blair's wealthy friends scooped up a large slice of cake and handed it to Graham.

Hundreds of eyes watched.

Graham shook his head.

"I don't think—"

"Oh, don't be boring," Blair interrupted.

The guests laughed.

Feeling trapped by the moment, Graham reluctantly took the cake.

Before he could stop himself, Blair grabbed his wrist and shoved it forward.

The frosting exploded across Nora's face.

Silence.

Only Blair laughed.

Then several guests joined in.

Nora stood frozen, whipped cream sliding down her cheeks.

Lily had seen everything.

Tears filled her eyes as she ran from the room clutching Pickle.

Graham stared at Nora in horror.

May you like

"I'm... I'm so sorry."

But the damage had already been done.
