CHAPTER 3: "She Hid It"

CHAPTER 3: "She Hid It"

Eleven minutes later, the music stopped.

A tiny voice echoed through the ballroom.

"Mr. Graham?"

Every head turned.

Lily stood barefoot at the entrance wearing her pink pajamas.

Her cheeks were wet with tears.

She held Pickle tightly under one arm.

In her other hand was a small silver jewelry box.

She walked slowly toward the bride.

Nobody moved.

Children were not supposed to interrupt weddings.

But something in Lily's expression silenced the room.

She stopped directly in front of Blair.

Raised one tiny finger.

And whispered,

"She hid it."

The ballroom became still.

Blair's smile disappeared.

"What are you talking about?" she asked.

Lily pointed at the jeweled belt wrapped around Blair's wedding dress.

"I saw you."

Nora rushed forward.

"Lily, sweetheart..."

But Lily shook her head.

"When Mommy was cleaning upstairs, the pretty lady opened Grandma Margaret's room."

Graham frowned.

"My mother's room?"

Lily nodded.

"She put something shiny inside her dress."

Every guest watched Blair.

Her breathing became uneven.

"She's confused," Blair said quickly.

"She's only three."

Lily lifted the silver jewelry box.

"I found this."

Graham immediately recognized it.

It had belonged to his mother.

Inside had once rested Margaret Whitaker's diamond-and-sapphire family brooch, an heirloom passed down for four generations.

He opened the box.

It was empty.

His face turned pale.

Blair stepped backward.

"It must have been stolen weeks ago."

Lily quietly shook her head.

"No."

Then she pointed again.

"It's still there."

Security approached cautiously.

One female security supervisor politely asked Blair if she would consent to a private search.

Blair refused.

The refusal lasted less than thirty seconds.

When deputies arrived—called by one of the wedding planners after sensing the growing conflict—the search revealed the missing Whitaker heirloom carefully sewn inside the inner lining of Blair's wedding gown.

The ballroom erupted.

Some guests gasped.

Others immediately lowered their phones.

Blair stood speechless.

Graham looked at the woman he had nearly married.

For the first time, he realized he had never truly known her.
