Chapter 4: The Family That Didn’t Stand

Chapter 4: The Family That Didn’t Stand

As they led him away, Preston finally looked at me.

Not angry.

Not smug.

Afraid.

“You’re really going to do this?” he spat. “To your own brother?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

I looked down at Sophie.

At her trembling hands.

At the way she still clung to me like the world wasn’t safe anymore.

Then I looked back at him.

“You did this to yourself,” I said quietly.

My mother rushed forward.

“Evelyn, think about the family name!”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“For once, I am.”

My father didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

He just stood there like a man watching something he thought he controlled finally slip out of his hands.

And for the first time in my life

I didn’t need their approval to walk away.

EPILOGUE (ENGLISH)

Some families protect their children.

Others protect their image.

And some—only realize the difference when the truth is playing back on a screen too big to ignore.

Preston Bennett didn’t fall because of a mistake.

He fell because he believed no one would ever question him.

But the camera did not care about family loyalty.

It only recorded what happened.

And in the end, the truth was louder than every lie they had spent years building.
