PART 1 — The Name They Forgot to Respect

PART 1 — The Name They Forgot to Respect

The silence in the ballroom didn’t break—it collapsed.

Forks hovered midair. A waiter stopped breathing. Even the string quartet faltered like someone had cut their power.

My father slowly lowered his glass.

“You’re interrupting,” he said sharply, forcing authority back into his voice. “This is a private family event.”

Thomas Harrington didn’t even glance at him.

“I’m aware,” he replied calmly. Then he looked back at me. “We’ve been trying to reach you all evening.”

Daniel scoffed under his breath. “Forbes? This is a birthday party, not a press conference.”

That was when Thomas finally turned his head.

Not fully. Just enough.

“You’re Daniel Whitmore?” he asked.

“Yeah,” Daniel said, puffing his chest slightly. “And you’re—”

“Not relevant,” Thomas finished.

A few guests laughed nervously, unsure if they were allowed to.

My mother stepped forward, her smile tight. “If this is about publicity, we don’t do surprises here. Clara is—”

“Clara Whitmore,” Thomas repeated, sharper this time. “Is not here for publicity.”

He opened the leather portfolio.

The Forbes insignia caught the chandelier light.

And then he said it.

“Your daughter is the majority shareholder of Whitmore Global Holdings.”

The room didn’t just go quiet.

It froze.

My mother blinked. Once. Twice. “That’s impossible.”

Daniel laughed. “Whitmore Global is my father’s—”

“Was,” Thomas corrected.

Then he placed a document on the table nearest him.

And the color drained from my father’s face as he saw the signature at the bottom.

Mine.
