Chapter 11 — Dana's Last Lie

Chapter 11 — Dana's Last Lie

The timer kept counting.

29:41.

Emma stared at the red numbers on the wall.

Daniel Price stood ten feet away with a gun pointed toward her chest.

Arthur was outside the boardroom.

Rachel was beside him.

And through the ceiling speakers, Evelyn's voice remained terrifyingly calm.

“Twenty-nine minutes.”

Emma looked at the camera above the door.

“Mother?”

No answer.

“Evelyn.”

A faint click came through the speakers.

Then:

“You shouldn't have opened the archive.”

Emma's jaw tightened.

“You shouldn't have lied to me.”

Silence.

“You lied about my father.”

Nothing.

“You lied about Gabriel.”

Nothing.

“You lied about my birth.”

Still nothing.

Emma looked at the timer.

“Now you're threatening my daughter.”

Evelyn finally answered.

“No.”

Emma froze.

“Then who is?”

A pause.

“The person who controls the timer.”

The speakers went silent.

Daniel's hand tightened around the gun.

Emma looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel swallowed.

“You already know.”

“Gabriel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked toward Arthur.

“Ask your father.”

Emma turned.

Arthur's face had gone completely pale.

“I don't know.”

Daniel laughed.

“You always say that.”

Emma studied him.

“Why are you doing this?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Because Dana told me the truth.”

Emma froze.

“Dana?”

“Yes.”

“She's in custody.”

Daniel nodded.

“She is.”

“Then what did she tell you?”

Daniel looked directly at Emma.

“That she never betrayed Gabriel.”

Dana Vale

Three hours earlier, Dana sat inside an interrogation room.

No jewelry.

No designer clothes.

No makeup.

No hotel staff waiting outside.

For the first time in years, she looked ordinary.

A federal investigator placed a cup of water in front of her.

“Dana Carter.”

She didn't answer.

“You've been charged with conspiracy, fraud, unlawful financial transfers, witness intimidation, and attempted kidnapping.”

Dana smiled.

“You forgot something.”

“What?”

“Murder.”

The investigator stared.

“You're admitting to murder?”

“No.”

Dana leaned back.

“I'm saying you haven't found the body.”

The door opened.

Emma walked in.

Dana's smile disappeared.

Emma sat opposite her.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally Dana said:

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“You want answers.”

“Yes.”

Dana looked at her.

“Then you're going to hate them.”

Emma folded her hands.

“I already hate you.”

Dana smiled faintly.

“That makes this easier.”

The First Lie

Emma placed a photograph on the table.

“Room 814.”

Dana glanced at it.

“I wasn't there.”

Emma placed another.

Dana entering the hotel.

Then another.

Dana speaking with Nathan.

Another.

Dana meeting Thomas.

Dana stopped smiling.

Emma leaned forward.

“You were there.”

“I was.”

“You knew Sophie was in the hallway.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered her out.”

Dana's expression hardened.

“No.”

Emma stared.

“You're lying.”

“I didn't order it.”

“Then who did?”

Dana looked away.

Emma waited.

Dana finally whispered:

“Evelyn.”

Emma froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dana shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“You were working for her.”

“Yes.”

“So you knew.”

“I knew part of it.”

Emma's voice became cold.

“Tell me everything.”

Dana looked at her.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because if I tell you, she'll kill Sophie.”

Emma's expression didn't change.

“She already tried.”

Dana's eyes widened.

“No.”

“She locked my daughter outside a hotel room.”

Dana shook her head.

“That wasn't the plan.”

“What plan?”

Dana whispered:

“Room 814 was supposed to be the beginning.”

The Real Purpose of Room 814

Emma leaned closer.

“Beginning of what?”

Dana stared at the table.

“Custody.”

Emma's stomach tightened.

“They wanted Sophie declared unsafe.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To activate the Carter succession clause.”

Emma frowned.

“What clause?”

Dana explained.

“If you were declared an unfit mother, temporary guardianship would transfer to the Carter trustee.”

“Who?”

Dana looked up.

“Thomas.”

Emma's eyes narrowed.

“And Nathan?”

“Secondary guardian.”

“Gabriel?”

“Final beneficiary.”

Emma felt sick.

“They planned to take my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Permanently?”

Dana nodded.

Emma's fingers curled.

“Why?”

Dana hesitated.

“Because Sophie is the only person who can legally unite the two trusts.”

Emma stared.

“What does that mean?”

“Your mother built the Carter trust.”

“Arthur built the Hartwell trust.”

“Yes.”

“And Sophie?”

Dana whispered:

“She is named in both.”

Emma understood.

“Whoever controls Sophie controls both.”

Dana nodded.

“That was always the plan.”

Emma leaned back.

“And you?”

“I was supposed to make you look unstable.”

Emma remembered.

The insults.

The humiliation.

The hallway.

The bear.

Dana's voice.

“You're a terrible mother.”

Emma looked at her.

“You wanted me angry.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted me to react.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“So the cameras would record you.”

Emma's eyes widened.

“The hotel was watching.”

Dana nodded.

“Every argument.”

“Every scream.”

“Every time Sophie cried.”

Emma stared at her.

“You were building evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Against me.”

“Yes.”

The Second Lie

Emma placed another document on the table.

“Then why did you stop?”

Dana looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Your bank statement.”

Dana went pale.

“You received two million dollars from Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“And then you transferred half of it.”

Dana said nothing.

“To someone else.”

Silence.

Emma pushed the statement closer.

“Who?”

Dana looked up.

“Your father.”

Emma froze.

“What?”

“Arthur.”

“Why would you pay my father?”

“I didn't.”

“The transfer says you did.”

Dana shook her head.

“That account wasn't Arthur's.”

Emma looked at the account number.

Then stopped.

The last four digits.

She knew them.

They belonged to her.

Her private account.

The one she had opened after her mother's supposed death.

The one only three people knew existed.

Arthur.

Nathan.

And Emma.

Emma's face changed.

“Nathan.”

Dana nodded.

“He controlled the account.”

“How?”

“He had your signature.”

Emma's stomach turned.

“My signature?”

“He forged it.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Everything clicked.

The money.

The transfers.

The missing funds.

The accusations.

Nathan hadn't just stolen from the company.

He had used Emma's identity to move the money.

And then blamed her.

The Third Lie

Emma stood.

Dana looked up.

“You're leaving?”

“No.”

Emma placed one final document on the table.

Dana's face changed.

“What is that?”

“Your medical records.”

Dana stared.

“Where did you get those?”

“From the Carter archive.”

Dana swallowed.

“You were diagnosed…”

Emma stopped.

“That's not what it says.”

Dana's face went pale.

Emma read the document.

“You were diagnosed with dissociative episodes after your father's death.”

Dana's eyes filled with tears.

“You weren't supposed to find that.”

“Who hid it?”

“My mother.”

“Evelyn?”

Dana nodded.

“Why?”

“Because she told everyone I was unstable.”

Emma stared.

“She used you.”

“Yes.”

“To manipulate Nathan.”

“Yes.”

“To manipulate Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“To manipulate Gabriel.”

Dana looked at her.

“No.”

Emma frowned.

Dana whispered:

“Gabriel manipulated her.”

The Woman Behind the Woman

Dana's voice dropped.

“My mother wasn't the mastermind.”

Emma stared.

“Then who was?”

Dana looked at the door.

“Gabriel.”

“He's been controlling everything.”

“Yes.”

“Even Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“Even Arthur?”

“No.”

Dana shook her head.

“Arthur was never under his control.”

“Then why did Arthur fake his death?”

“Because he was hunting Gabriel.”

Emma frowned.

“Then why did he hide from me?”

Dana hesitated.

“Because Gabriel had another weapon.”

“What?”

Dana looked directly into Emma's eyes.

“You.”

Emma said nothing.

“You were Gabriel's daughter.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Dana's voice trembled.

“You don't know the whole truth.”

Emma's heart began pounding.

“What don't I know?”

Dana whispered:

“You weren't the only child.”

Emma froze.

“What?”

“Gabriel had another daughter.”

Emma stared.

“Who?”

Dana looked at the door.

Then at Emma.

“Sophie.”

The Child

Emma's face went white.

“No.”

Dana nodded.

“Sophie isn't Nathan's biological daughter.”

Emma stood motionless.

“What did you say?”

“She isn't.”

“Then whose child is she?”

Dana looked at her.

“Gabriel's.”

Emma shook her head.

“That is impossible.”

Dana swallowed.

“Gabriel had Sophie before you met Nathan.”

Emma couldn't breathe.

“She was implanted?”

Dana shook her head.

“No.”

“Adopted?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

Dana whispered:

“She was born from your mother.”

Emma's eyes widened.

“My mother?”

Dana nodded.

“Evelyn carried her.”

Emma stared.

The room seemed to tilt.

“Sophie is my sister?”

Dana looked down.

“Yes.”

Emma stepped backward.

“No.”

“She is.”

“No.”

Dana began crying.

“You were both part of the same experiment.”

Emma's voice broke.

“What experiment?”

Dana didn't answer.

Emma grabbed the table.

“Tell me.”

Dana looked at her.

“The Carter-Hartwell bloodline.”

The Last Lie

Emma returned to the boardroom in a daze.

The timer showed:

18:12.

Arthur looked at her.

“What happened?”

Emma stared at him.

“Where is Sophie?”

“Security has her.”

“Bring her to me.”

“Emma—”

“Now.”

Arthur saw her expression.

He nodded.

Rachel moved.

Emma looked toward Daniel.

“You said Dana told you the truth.”

Daniel nodded.

“She did.”

“Then you know about Sophie.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

He shook his head.

“I'm not supposed to.”

Emma stepped closer.

“Who gave you the order?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Gabriel.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“Who does?”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“Your father.”

Emma turned.

Arthur's face was unreadable.

“Dad?”

Arthur said nothing.

Emma stepped toward him.

“You know where Gabriel is.”

Arthur finally answered.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Arthur looked at the timer.

“Below us.”

Emma's eyes narrowed.

“Below the building?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Arthur whispered:

“Under the original Hartwell foundation.”

Emma stared.

“That was demolished.”

“No.”

Arthur looked at her.

“It was sealed.”

The Door Below

A hidden elevator opened.

Emma, Arthur, Rachel, and two agents entered.

The elevator descended.

Past the basement.

Past the archive.

Past the old foundation.

The numbers stopped.

B-9.

The doors opened.

A narrow corridor waited.

At the end was a steel door.

Arthur approached.

Emma stopped him.

“No.”

Arthur looked at her.

“I'll go first.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“You've lied enough.”

She took the lead.

The door opened.

Inside was a room filled with monitors.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Hospital footage.

Every moment of Emma's life.

Every moment of Sophie's.

Emma walked toward the central screen.

A video was playing.

Evelyn appeared.

She looked younger.

She was holding a newborn baby.

Sophie.

Then another woman entered.

Emma's breath stopped.

It was her mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Evelyn.

And behind them stood Gabriel.

Emma whispered:

“Mom.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

The video continued.

Gabriel looked into the camera.

“My daughters.”

Emma froze.

He continued.

“By the time you see this, one of you will believe she is a Hartwell.”

The screen changed.

A photograph of Emma.

Then Sophie.

Gabriel smiled.

“But blood doesn't lie.”

Emma stepped closer.

“You don't own us.”

The recording continued.

“You think the war is about money.”

Gabriel laughed.

“It never was.”

The screen went black.

Then one sentence appeared.

THE FIRST DAUGHTER INHERITS THE COMPANY.

Another line appeared.

THE SECOND DAUGHTER INHERITS THE FAMILY.

Emma stared.

“What does that mean?”

Arthur whispered:

“It means Gabriel never wanted the company.”

Emma turned.

“Then what did he want?”

Arthur looked toward the darkness behind them.

Before he could answer, a voice spoke.

“Me.”

Emma turned.

Gabriel stood in the doorway.

He was holding Sophie.

The little girl was crying.

Emma's heart stopped.

Gabriel smiled.

“Hello, Emma.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Gabriel raised a gun.

“No.”

Emma's eyes locked onto her daughter.

“Sophie.”

“Mommy!”

Gabriel tightened his arm around her.

Emma's face changed.

The woman who had spent seven years begging had disappeared.

She stepped forward.

“Put my daughter down.”

Gabriel smiled.

“And if I don't?”

Emma looked him directly in the eyes.

“Then I'll destroy everything you built.”

Gabriel laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

Emma's voice became cold.

“I understand enough.”

She took another step.

“You wanted me to beg.”

Gabriel's smile faded.

“You wanted me frightened.”

Another step.

“You wanted me to believe I was powerless.”

She stopped.

“But you made one mistake.”

Gabriel stared.

“What?”

Emma smiled.

“You gave me a reason to stop being afraid.”

The timer on the wall reached:

00:00.

Nothing happened.

Gabriel's smile returned.

Then Emma heard a click behind her.

Rachel whispered:

“Emma…”

Emma turned.

Every monitor in the room had switched on.

A live video appeared.

Dana sat inside the interrogation room.

She was smiling.

Then she spoke directly into the camera.

“Gabriel.”

His face changed.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”

Emma stared.

Dana continued:

“Because I saved the real evidence.”

Gabriel's face went pale.

Dana smiled.

“And it's already been sent.”

Gabriel looked at Emma.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

Emma whispered:

“What did you send?”

Dana answered through the speakers.

“Everything.”

The screen changed.

Thousands of files began uploading.

Bank records.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Audio.

Video.

Names.

Dates.

Transactions.

And at the top of the screen appeared one final file.

GABRIEL CARTER — CONFESSION

Emma looked at Gabriel.

He stared at the screen.

Then at Sophie.

Then at Emma.

And for the first time, the man who had spent decades controlling everyone around him realized the truth.

He had no secrets left.

Emma stepped forward.

“Put my daughter down.”

Gabriel didn't move.

Emma's voice became quieter.

“This is your last chance.”

Gabriel looked at her.

Then slowly lowered his gun.

But he didn't release Sophie.

Instead, he smiled.

“You think this is over?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Sophie.

“It's beginning.”

And somewhere far above them, every screen in Hartwell Group headquarters turned black.

Then one message appeared across the entire building:

THE CARTER FAMILY WAR IS OVER.

A second message followed.

THE HARTWELL WAR HAS JUST BEGUN.
