Chapter 12 — The Night Sophie Disappeared

Chapter 12 — The Night Sophie Disappeared

At 11:43 p.m., Sophie disappeared.

Emma would remember that exact time for the rest of her life.

Not because a clock had told her.

Because she had looked at it.

She had been standing beside Sophie's bed, watching her daughter sleep.

The room was dark except for the small amber night-light beside the bookshelf.

Mr. Buttons rested beneath Sophie's chin.

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

For the first time in days, Emma believed they were safe.

Gabriel was in custody.

Nathan was awaiting trial.

Thomas and Dana were being questioned.

The Carter network was collapsing.

Federal agents had secured the Hartwell headquarters.

Arthur was recovering under heavy protection.

Everything was finally moving in the right direction.

Emma had almost allowed herself to breathe.

Then Sophie opened her eyes.

“Mommy?”

Emma leaned closer.

“I'm here.”

“Can you stay?”

Emma smiled.

“Always.”

Sophie reached for her hand.

“Promise?”

Emma squeezed her fingers.

“I promise.”

Sophie closed her eyes.

Emma kissed her forehead.

Then she stood.

She walked toward the bedroom door.

She turned off the light.

She looked back once.

Sophie was still there.

Emma closed the door.

At 11:44, she received a phone call.

At 11:45, the hallway camera went dark.

At 11:46, someone entered Sophie's room.

At 11:47, the bedroom window opened.

At 11:48, Sophie was gone.

The Call

Emma was in the kitchen when her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered immediately.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

Then breathing.

Slow.

Controlled.

Emma's body went cold.

“Who is this?”

A child's voice whispered:

“Mommy?”

Emma froze.

“Sophie?”

The line went dead.

Emma dropped the glass in her hand.

It shattered across the floor.

“Rachel!”

She ran.

The bedroom door was open.

“Sophie?”

No answer.

Emma entered.

The bed was empty.

Mr. Buttons lay on the pillow.

One of his button eyes had been torn away.

Emma stopped breathing.

“No.”

She searched beneath the bed.

Nothing.

Bathroom.

Nothing.

Closet.

Nothing.

Window.

Open.

The curtains moved in the cold night air.

Emma ran toward it.

A small pink blanket was caught on the fire escape.

She grabbed it.

“Sophie!”

Her scream echoed through the apartment.

Security flooded the hallway.

Rachel arrived seconds later.

“What happened?”

Emma turned.

“She’s gone.”

Rachel's face changed.

“Who?”

“Sophie.”

Rachel ran into the room.

She saw the empty bed.

The open window.

The blanket.

Then she looked at Emma.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“Who was guarding this floor?”

“Four officers.”

“Where are they?”

Rachel grabbed her phone.

“I'll find out.”

Emma stood frozen.

Her eyes remained on the empty bed.

Then she saw something.

A small piece of paper beneath Mr. Buttons.

She picked it up.

Three words were written in black ink.

YOU PROMISED HER.

Emma's fingers began to shake.

Rachel saw the note.

“Don't touch anything else.”

Emma looked at her.

“They know.”

“Who?”

Emma whispered:

“They know what I said to her.”

The Security Room

Within five minutes, every elevator had been locked.

Every exit was sealed.

The hotel across the street was searched.

Cars leaving the underground garage were stopped.

No one entered.

No one left.

But Sophie was already gone.

Rachel stood before six security monitors.

“Show me the bedroom camera.”

The technician shook his head.

“It was disabled.”

“When?”

“11:45.”

“How?”

“Internal access.”

Rachel frowned.

“Which terminal?”

The technician looked at the system.

“Apartment security.”

“Whose credentials?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“Emma's.”

Emma stared.

“No.”

Rachel looked at her.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

“I never gave anyone my password.”

The technician swallowed.

“Someone didn't need it.”

“What does that mean?”

He turned the screen toward them.

“Your biometric authorization was used.”

Emma felt cold.

“My fingerprint?”

“Yes.”

“But I was in the kitchen.”

Rachel's expression hardened.

“Then someone copied it.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“My fingerprints aren't the problem.”

She looked at the screen.

“The system isn't recognizing a fingerprint.”

Rachel frowned.

“What is it recognizing?”

Emma pointed to the authorization log.

“An emergency override.”

Rachel read the code.

Her face changed.

“That's impossible.”

Emma looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because that code belongs to Arthur.”

Arthur

They found Arthur in the hospital.

He was asleep.

Two guards stood outside his room.

Emma entered alone.

“Dad.”

Arthur opened his eyes.

“What happened?”

“Where is Sophie?”

Arthur sat up immediately.

“What?”

“Sophie is gone.”

His face changed.

“What do you mean?”

“She disappeared from the apartment.”

Arthur stared at her.

“Who was guarding her?”

“Security.”

“Then how?”

Emma placed the authorization record on the table.

“Your code was used.”

Arthur looked at it.

His expression hardened.

“I didn't authorize anything.”

“I know.”

“Then someone stole it.”

Emma watched him.

“Who could?”

Arthur didn't answer.

“Dad.”

He looked at her.

“There is one person who had access to my emergency protocols.”

“Who?”

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“Your mother.”

Emma went still.

“Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“She was arrested.”

“No.”

“What?”

Arthur shook his head.

“Evelyn was never arrested.”

Emma stared.

“She was.”

“No.”

“Dad, I saw her.”

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

“On the screen.”

“What screen?”

“The boardroom.”

Arthur's expression changed.

“Emma…”

“What?”

“You didn't see Evelyn.”

Emma froze.

“What are you saying?”

“The woman you saw wasn't your mother.”

The Face

Rachel entered the room.

“Emma.”

Emma turned.

“We found the video.”

Rachel held up a tablet.

“Which video?”

“The boardroom footage.”

She played it.

Evelyn appeared on the screen.

The same voice.

The same face.

The same clothes.

Emma stared.

Rachel paused the video.

“Look carefully.”

Emma leaned closer.

Something was wrong.

The face looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Rachel zoomed in.

A faint line appeared near the ear.

Emma whispered:

“A mask.”

Rachel nodded.

“Silicone.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“She used to work with a special-effects engineer.”

Emma looked at him.

“Who?”

Arthur answered:

“Thomas Carter.”

Emma's stomach dropped.

“Then Thomas is behind this.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas is in federal custody.”

Emma stared.

“Then who?”

Arthur looked at her.

“The person who disappeared before the arrests.”

Emma understood.

“Gabriel.”

Arthur nodded.

The Empty Cell

At 12:19 a.m., the prison called.

Gabriel Carter was gone.

Not escaped.

Gone.

His cell had been locked.

His restraints had remained intact.

His clothes were still inside.

But the man himself had vanished.

Rachel stared at the report.

“That isn't possible.”

Emma looked at her.

“It is.”

“How?”

Emma remembered the underground vault.

The monitors.

The hidden doors.

The medical records.

The tunnels.

“He didn't escape.”

Rachel frowned.

“What?”

“He was never in the cell.”

Silence.

Emma continued:

“The man they arrested wasn't Gabriel.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Then who?”

Emma whispered:

“A decoy.”

The Second Child

At 12:31 a.m., Emma received another message.

No number.

No name.

Just a photograph.

Sophie.

She was sitting in a car.

Her eyes were wet.

She was holding Mr. Buttons.

Behind her was a dark wall.

Emma zoomed in.

There was a small symbol painted behind Sophie.

A silver tree.

Emma stared.

Arthur recognized it.

“Carter.”

Emma looked at him.

“What?”

“That symbol belonged to Gabriel's private organization.”

“Where?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Under the old Carter estate.”

“Where is that?”

“Outside Milwaukee.”

Rachel was already moving.

“I'll get the coordinates.”

Arthur stopped her.

“No.”

Rachel turned.

“Why?”

“Because the estate was demolished.”

Emma stared.

“Then where is Sophie?”

Arthur's face hardened.

“Below it.”

The Road to Milwaukee

They left within twenty minutes.

Three armored vehicles.

Six agents.

Rachel.

Emma.

Arthur.

The city disappeared behind them.

Chicago's lights became distant.

The highway stretched into darkness.

Emma sat in the back seat.

She held Sophie's blanket.

It still smelled like lavender shampoo.

Rachel sat beside her.

“Don't blame yourself.”

Emma stared through the window.

“I promised her.”

“You couldn't have known.”

“I promised.”

Rachel was silent.

Emma looked down.

“I spent years thinking being strong meant never needing anyone.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

Emma looked at her.

“Being strong means knowing when you need help.”

Emma looked at Sophie's blanket.

“I need my daughter.”

Rachel nodded.

“Then we'll bring her home.”

The Carter Estate

They arrived at 2:07 a.m.

The estate looked abandoned.

Broken stone walls.

Overgrown trees.

Collapsed buildings.

No lights.

No guards.

Nothing.

Emma stared.

“This is where he is?”

Arthur nodded.

“Was.”

Rachel signaled the agents.

They moved forward.

The front doors were chained.

Emma looked around.

“There's no entrance.”

Arthur pointed toward the ground.

“There is.”

They moved behind the ruined house.

A stone staircase descended underground.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Emma placed her hand against it.

Nothing happened.

Arthur stepped forward.

The door opened.

Emma stared at him.

“You still have access?”

Arthur shook his head.

“I didn't open it.”

The door slowly moved wider.

A light came on inside.

Then another.

Then another.

Leading downward.

Rachel raised her weapon.

“Everyone stay together.”

Emma stepped forward.

“I'll go first.”

Arthur grabbed her arm.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“My daughter is down there.”

“I know.”

“Then let me go.”

Arthur released her.

Emma descended.

The Room

The tunnel ended in a large underground chamber.

There were photographs on every wall.

Emma.

Sophie.

Arthur.

Evelyn.

Nathan.

Dana.

Thomas.

Gabriel.

Seven years of surveillance.

Emma walked past them.

Then stopped.

A photograph of Sophie as a newborn.

Beside it was a document.

SUBJECT TWO — FEMALE

Emma touched the paper.

Rachel read over her shoulder.

“Subject Two?”

Emma looked at her.

“Who's Subject One?”

Rachel turned the page.

There was another photograph.

Emma as a newborn.

Under it:

SUBJECT ONE — FEMALE

Emma's heart pounded.

“This isn't about inheritance.”

Arthur stepped closer.

“No.”

“It was an experiment.”

Arthur didn't answer.

Emma turned.

“Tell me.”

Arthur's face was filled with regret.

“Your mother and Gabriel believed they could engineer the perfect successor.”

Emma's voice shook.

“And Sophie?”

“Was the second attempt.”

Emma stared.

“Attempt?”

Arthur nodded.

“They wanted a child with Carter blood and Hartwell intelligence.”

Emma felt sick.

“My mother agreed to this?”

Arthur looked away.

“She believed she was protecting the family.”

Emma whispered:

“She used us.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at the photographs.

Then at Sophie's picture.

“Where is she?”

A voice answered from the darkness.

“Right here.”

Emma turned.

Gabriel stepped into the light.

Sophie was beside him.

She was holding Mr. Buttons.

Emma's heart broke.

“Sophie.”

Her daughter looked at her.

“Mommy!”

Emma stepped forward.

Gabriel raised his hand.

“Stay.”

Emma stopped.

Gabriel smiled.

“You came exactly when I expected.”

Emma stared at him.

“Let her go.”

“No.”

“You've lost.”

Gabriel laughed.

“Have I?”

“You've been exposed.”

“That doesn't matter.”

“Your money is frozen.”

“I have money elsewhere.”

“Your network is collapsing.”

“I built another.”

“Your family is turning against you.”

Gabriel smiled.

“My family was never the point.”

Emma stared.

“Then what is?”

Gabriel looked at Sophie.

“Her.”

Emma's blood ran cold.

“What do you want from her?”

“Nothing.”

Gabriel's smile faded.

“I want what she represents.”

Emma stepped forward.

“She is a child.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“She is proof.”

“Of what?”

“That my bloodline survived.”

Emma shook her head.

“You're insane.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Perhaps.”

Then he pointed toward a large screen.

A video appeared.

Evelyn was sitting in a chair.

She looked exhausted.

Alive.

Emma froze.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

“Emma…”

Gabriel smiled.

“She has something to tell you.”

Emma stared at the screen.

Evelyn whispered:

“I lied to you about Sophie.”

Emma's face went cold.

“What?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Sophie isn't your sister.”

Emma stopped.

Gabriel's expression changed.

Evelyn continued.

“She isn't Gabriel's daughter either.”

Silence.

Emma looked at Sophie.

Then at Gabriel.

Then at Arthur.

“Then whose daughter is she?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yours.”

Emma frowned.

“I don't understand.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Sophie was born from your genetic material.”

Emma froze.

“What?”

“She's your biological daughter.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“She was created from your cells.”

Emma stared.

“Created?”

Evelyn whispered:

“After you were born, Gabriel took samples from you.”

Emma felt sick.

“He used them to create Sophie.”

Gabriel smiled.

Emma turned toward him.

“You made my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You stole her from me.”

“Yes.”

“You planned this before I even knew she existed.”

“Yes.”

Emma's hands began shaking.

“Why?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Because you were the first.”

He looked at Sophie.

“She was the second.”

Emma stared.

“And what happens to the second?”

Gabriel's smile disappeared.

“She replaces the first.”

A terrible silence followed.

Then Sophie began crying.

“Mommy.”

Emma looked at her.

Her daughter stretched out her arms.

Emma stepped forward.

Gabriel raised the gun.

“Don't.”

Emma stopped.

Then she smiled.

Gabriel frowned.

“What?”

“You made another mistake.”

“What?”

“You told me where to find her.”

Gabriel's face changed.

Emma lifted her phone.

The recording light was on.

Rachel smiled from behind the doorway.

Federal agents poured into the chamber.

Gabriel spun around.

Too late.

Rachel shouted:

“Drop the weapon!”

Gabriel grabbed Sophie.

Emma screamed:

“Let her go!”

Gabriel backed toward the tunnel.

Then he whispered:

“If I can't have the family…”

He looked at Emma.

“…no one will.”

A gunshot exploded.

The lights went out.

Sophie screamed.

Emma ran.

She heard Rachel shouting.

Arthur calling her name.

Another shot.

Then silence.

When the emergency lights came back on, Gabriel was gone.

So was Sophie.

Emma stood in the center of the room.

Her daughter's blanket lay on the floor.

Mr. Buttons was beside it.

One ear torn.

One button missing.

Emma picked him up.

Her hands were shaking.

Rachel ran toward her.

“Emma!”

Emma looked at her.

“He took her.”

Rachel nodded.

“We'll find him.”

Emma stared into the darkness of the tunnel.

“No.”

Her voice was different now.

Not frightened.

Not desperate.

Cold.

“He wanted me to chase him.”

Rachel watched her.

Emma tightened her grip around the bear.

“He thinks I'm going to beg.”

She turned toward the tunnel.

“I won't.”

Arthur stepped beside her.

“What will you do?”

Emma looked at the darkness.

“I'll hunt.”

And somewhere beneath the ruined Carter estate, a hidden door closed.

On the other side, Gabriel carried Sophie into darkness.

But he didn't notice the tiny red light beneath the child's sleeve.

Emma had placed it there before leaving Chicago.

A tracker.

A promise.

And the first move in a war Gabriel had finally made personal.

Emma looked at Rachel.

“Find my daughter.”

Rachel nodded.

“How far do we go?”

Emma stared into the darkness.

“As far as necessary.”

She looked down at Mr. Buttons.

“And this time…”

May you like

Her voice hardened.

“I'm bringing everyone home.”
