Chapter 9 — The Woman They Tried to Destroy

Chapter 9 — The Woman They Tried to Destroy
At 6:17 the next morning, Diego was standing in his study when the first accusation arrived.
His phone vibrated.
Then again.
Then again.
By the fourth notification, Rafael came running.
“Don't open anything.”
Diego looked at him.
“What happened?”
“Someone leaked documents.”
“What documents?”
“Everything.”
Rafael placed his tablet on the desk.
On the screen was a headline already spreading across Mexican media:
BILLIONAIRE DIEGO VILLASEÑOR HIDES SECRET DAUGHTER WHILE MAID RECEIVES MILLION-DOLLAR TRUST
Another headline appeared beneath it.
VILLASEÑOR FAMILY FORTUNE LINKED TO MISSING HERRERA ASSETS
Then another.
WHO IS MARISOL SANTOS?
Diego's face hardened.
“They're attacking Marisol.”
Rafael nodded.
“Not just her.”
He scrolled.
There were photographs.
Old photographs of Marisol leaving the mansion.
Photos of her working.
Photos of Valentina.
Even photographs of Marisol pregnant.
Private photographs.
Images that should never have existed outside the family.
Diego felt something cold move through him.
“Who leaked these?”
“We're tracing it.”
“Paulina?”
“We don't know.”
“Find out.”
Marisol was in the kitchen when her phone began ringing.
Unknown numbers.
She ignored the first.
Then the second.
Then the tenth.
Finally, she answered.
“Hello?”
A woman's voice said:
“You should be ashamed.”
Marisol frowned.
“Who is this?”
“You destroyed a family.”
The call ended.
Another arrived.
Then another.
Messages began appearing.
Gold digger.
You trapped Diego with a child.
You knew exactly what you were doing.
Maid today, billionaire tomorrow.
Marisol dropped the phone onto the counter.
Her hands trembled.
She had lived through poverty.
Loneliness.
Pregnancy.
Abandonment.
Years of hiding.
But this was different.
The entire country was suddenly being invited to hate her.
And she didn't understand why.
Paulina walked downstairs.
She was dressed in black.
Perfectly composed.
She saw Marisol.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Paulina said:
“You should leave.”
Marisol looked at her.
“What?”
“Take Valentina and go.”
“Why?”
“Because this isn't about money anymore.”
Marisol's eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?”
Paulina shook her head.
“Not what you think.”
“Then explain.”
Paulina stepped closer.
“They want you destroyed.”
“Who?”
Paulina looked toward the windows.
“The people who believe Valentina controls the trust.”
Marisol froze.
“Who told them?”
Paulina didn't answer.
“Paulina.”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I am.”
Marisol stared.
Paulina's eyes filled with tears.
“But I'm not lying about the danger.”
Diego entered.
“What danger?”
Paulina turned.
“Diego.”
“What did you mean?”
Paulina remained silent.
Diego walked toward her.
“Who is trying to destroy Marisol?”
“You won't believe me.”
“Try.”
Paulina swallowed.
“The media leak wasn't meant to hurt Marisol.”
Diego frowned.
“What?”
“It was meant to make you discredit her.”
“Why?”
“Because once you stop trusting her, you'll separate her from Valentina.”
“And then?”
“Then they take control of the trust.”
Diego stared.
“Who?”
Paulina whispered:
“Your uncle.”
Silence.
“Ramón?”
Paulina nodded.
“He's been working with the people who want the Herrera assets back.”
Diego shook his head.
“That's impossible.”
“I saw the transfers.”
Rafael stepped forward.
“We did too.”
Diego looked at him.
“The money?”
“Transferred through three shell companies.”
“Where did it end?”
Rafael hesitated.
“An offshore account.”
“Whose?”
“Ramón Villaseñor.”
Diego closed his eyes.
His family was collapsing in front of him.
Then Marisol spoke.
“Why are you helping me?”
Paulina looked at her.
“Because I know what it feels like to be blamed for something you didn't do.”
Marisol laughed bitterly.
“You blamed me for everything.”
“I know.”
“You lied to Diego.”
“I know.”
“You tried to take my daughter away.”
“I know.”
Paulina's voice cracked.
“But I also know what Ramón did to my family.”
Diego turned.
“What did Ramón do?”
Paulina hesitated.
“My father wasn't the man who betrayed your family.”
Diego frowned.
“What?”
“Gabriel tried to stop Ramón.”
The room went silent.
“Ramón was the one moving money.”
Paulina continued.
“He used my father's company.”
“He forged documents.”
“He made it look like Gabriel was responsible.”
Diego stared.
“Then why did my father believe Gabriel was guilty?”
“Because Ramón made sure he did.”
The door opened.
Mateo entered.
He had heard enough.
“She's telling the truth.”
Diego looked at him.
“You knew?”
Mateo nodded.
“Ramón was involved.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know who I could trust.”
Diego looked at Paulina.
“Not even her?”
Mateo looked at Paulina.
“Especially not her.”
Paulina flinched.
Mateo continued.
“Paulina spent years protecting the wrong people.”
“I was a child.”
“You were old enough to know.”
“I was sixteen.”
Mateo stopped.
Diego looked at him.
“Sixteen?”
Paulina's face hardened.
“That's when my father died.”
Mateo lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“And Ramón told me if I spoke, Diego would be next.”
Diego stared at her.
“You were threatened?”
“Yes.”
“By Ramón?”
Paulina nodded.
“That's why I did what I did.”
Marisol looked at her.
“You still hurt me.”
“I know.”
Paulina began crying.
“I thought hurting one woman was better than getting an entire family killed.”
Marisol's expression softened for only a second.
Then hardened again.
“You were wrong.”
“I know.”
That afternoon, things became worse.
The board called an emergency meeting.
Investors demanded answers.
Banks began reviewing Villaseñor accounts.
Reporters gathered outside the mansion.
The family name was collapsing.
And then the worst headline appeared.
MARISOL SANTOS ACCUSED OF FORGING PATERNITY CLAIM
Diego slammed his phone onto the desk.
“That's enough.”
Rafael looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
“Tell the truth.”
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“Even the trust?”
“Yes.”
“Even the money?”
“Yes.”
Rafael hesitated.
“That could destroy the company.”
Diego looked at him.
“Then maybe the company deserves to survive without the lie.”
The press conference began at six.
Hundreds of journalists crowded the room.
Cameras flashed.
Questions shouted.
“Mr. Villaseñor, is Valentina your daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Did Marisol manipulate you?”
“No.”
“Did she know about your family's fortune?”
“No.”
“Was she employed as a maid to gain access to your family?”
“No.”
“Then why did she hide your daughter?”
Diego paused.
“Because I abandoned her without knowing she was pregnant.”
The room became silent.
That answer changed everything.
Diego continued.
“I was wrong.”
He looked directly into the cameras.
“Marisol did not steal my family.”
“She protected our daughter.”
“She raised her alone.”
“She asked for nothing.”
“And when I discovered the truth, I learned that my family's wealth was connected to a history we had concealed for decades.”
Reporters began shouting again.
Diego raised his hand.
“I will not allow Marisol to become the scapegoat for crimes committed before she was born.”
Then he said the sentence that shocked everyone:
“If the Villaseñor fortune contains assets that belong to the Herrera family, they will be returned.”
The board members watching from the back looked horrified.
Diego didn't care.
He had spent too long protecting a name.
Now he would protect his daughter.
But someone wasn't listening.
In a dark office across the city, Ramón watched the broadcast.
Beside him sat a man Diego had never seen.
Ramón smiled.
“He's destroying himself.”
The man shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“He's becoming difficult.”
Ramón looked at him.
“Then we remove the woman.”
“Marisol?”
“Yes.”
“And the child?”
Ramón's expression changed.
“The child stays alive.”
“Why?”
“Because she is the only person who can legally unlock the trust.”
The man nodded.
“And Diego?”
Ramón looked at the television.
“Diego will destroy himself trying to save them.”
That night, Marisol stood on the mansion balcony.
Diego joined her.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“Me neither.”
She looked at him.
“You shouldn't have said all that.”
“Yes, I should.”
“They'll come after you.”
“They already are.”
Marisol looked down.
“I don't want Valentina growing up surrounded by this.”
“She won't.”
“How can you promise?”
Diego took her hand.
“Because I'm going to end it.”
She stared at him.
“You can't control everyone.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“But I can control what I do.”
Marisol's eyes filled.
For the first time since they had reunited, she allowed herself to lean against him.
Diego wrapped his arms around her.
Neither spoke.
Then a scream came from upstairs.
“Mommy!”
They ran.
Valentina was standing beside her bed.
A piece of paper lay on the floor.
Marisol picked it up.
Four words.
YOUR MOTHER LIED TOO.
Marisol froze.
“What does this mean?”
Diego looked at her.
“I don't know.”
But Mateo did.
He had followed them upstairs.
He read the message.
His face changed.
“Marisol.”
“What?”
“Your mother wasn't killed.”
Marisol stopped breathing.
“What?”
Mateo looked at her.
“She disappeared.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“Because I saw her last year.”
Marisol stared at him.
“Where?”
Mateo's voice became barely audible.
“In Guadalajara.”
Marisol's knees weakened.
Diego caught her.
“Your mother is alive.”
Marisol looked toward Valentina.
Then at the message.
And suddenly the woman everyone thought was a victim of the family secret realized something terrifying.
The people attacking her weren't trying to destroy her because she was weak.
They were trying to destroy her because she was the only living person who could lead Diego to the woman who knew the entire truth.
May you like
Her mother.
And somewhere in Guadalajara, that woman had been waiting for them.
