Chapter 2: The Man in the Blue Suit

Chapter 2: The Man in the Blue Suit

The air changed the moment he walked in.

Not because he was loud.

Because he wasn’t.

The man in the tailored blue suit paused just inside the entrance, eyes adjusting slowly to the scene in front of him.

Lily didn’t look up.

The shopkeeper did.

And immediately straightened his posture.

“Sir,” he said quickly, switching tones. “We’re just dealing with a problem customer—”

The man ignored him.

His gaze was fixed on the child on the floor.

He stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if sudden movement might break something already fragile.

He knelt in front of Lily.

“Hey,” he said gently. “Look at me.”

Lily hesitated.

Then lifted her eyes.

The stranger saw everything at once—hunger, exhaustion, fear, and a kind of bravery no child should ever need.

“What’s your name?” he asked softly.

“Lily,” she whispered.

“And her?” he nodded toward the baby.

“My sister…”

The shopkeeper scoffed behind them. “If you’re done with your little drama—”

“Quiet,” the man said without looking back.

It wasn’t loud.

But it was absolute.

The shopkeeper stopped speaking.

The man’s attention returned to the baby.

And then—

he saw it.

A small silver bracelet on the infant’s wrist.
