Chapter 2: The Queen's Last Letter

Chapter 2: The Queen's Last Letter

The wedding never happened.

Not that day.

Not after what everyone had seen.

That evening, Prince Richard was summoned to the royal library.

Only three people attended.

The king.

Richard.

And Eleanor.

The king looked twenty years older than he had that morning.

Without speaking, he unlocked a hidden compartment behind a bookshelf.

Inside rested a wooden chest.

Dust covered its surface.

The seal belonged to Queen Isabella.

With trembling hands, Eleanor opened it.

Inside lay dozens of letters.

And one addressed directly to her.

My dearest daughter,

If you are reading this, the mask has finally come off.

I prayed that day would never come.

Not because I was ashamed of you.

Because I was afraid for you.

Eleanor continued reading.

As she did, tears filled her eyes.

The truth was more terrible than any rumor.

Years before Eleanor's birth, Isabella had discovered an ancient secret hidden within the royal bloodline.

Every firstborn daughter inherited a rare condition.

Not physical.

Not magical.

Something stranger.

Their appearance changed.

Slowly.

Perfectly.

Until they became identical to the woman they loved most.

The transformation happened gradually during childhood.

By age six, Eleanor no longer resembled herself.

She had become a mirror of her mother.

And history showed that kingdoms feared what they couldn't explain.

Generations earlier, a princess with the same condition had been accused of witchcraft and burned alive.

Thousands had died in the chaos that followed.

The mask was never meant to imprison Eleanor.

It was meant to protect her.

The king had obeyed Isabella's dying request.

Hide her face.

Keep her alive.

Wait until she is old enough to understand.

Eleanor lowered the letter.

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

For years she had believed her father hated her.

Feared her.

Punished her.

Now she discovered he had spent two decades protecting her from a terrified world.

The king finally spoke.

"Your mother begged me."

His voice cracked.

"It was the last thing she ever asked."

For the first time since childhood, Eleanor stepped forward and embraced him.

And the king who had ruled through fear began to cry.
