Chapter 2: A Warm Place
The building was an old shelter that few people knew existed.
Inside, warmth wrapped around them like a blanket.
The homeless girl sat near a fireplace while volunteers brought soup, tea, and clean clothes. She ate carefully at first, afraid the food might suddenly disappear.
The girl in the coat stayed beside her the entire time.
"My name is Emma," she said.
The homeless girl hesitated.
"Lily."
Emma smiled.
"It’s nice to meet you, Lily."
Those simple words nearly made Lily cry again.
Over the following weeks, Emma visited every day. She brought books, toys, and stories from school. Little by little, Lily began smiling.
The shelter director discovered that Lily had lost her parents years ago and had been surviving alone ever since.
Determined to help, the shelter worked tirelessly to find a permanent home for her.
Months later, a loving family agreed to adopt Lily.
On the day she left the shelter, Emma hugged her tightly.
"You'll never be alone again."
