Chapter 3: The Last Pastry

The sun slipped below the horizon.

The old woman quietly closed her stall.

The businessman remained beside her.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally, she looked at him and smiled.

"I think my waiting is over."

The businessman swallowed hard.

"No. Come with me. Let me take care of you."

The old woman shook her head gently.

"You already have."

She pointed to the pastry in his hands.

"For fifty years, I was afraid the promise would be broken. Today, it wasn't."

A peaceful silence settled between them.

The businessman broke the pastry in half.

He offered one piece to her.

Just as his father had done long ago.

The old woman laughed softly through her tears and accepted it.

Together, they shared the last pastry as the evening lights awakened across the city.
