Chapter 4: The Woman From the Past

Chapter 4: The Woman From the Past

One year later, the village looked different.

New homes stood where ashes had once covered the ground.

A modern school had opened.

A medical clinic welcomed patients who had previously traveled hours for treatment.

Mary served as the director of the community foundation created to oversee the rebuilding.

One afternoon, Elena arrived quietly.

There were no cameras.

No reporters.

No security guards.

Only two women standing where an old house had once burned.

"I don't expect forgiveness," Elena said.

"I came to say I'm sorry."

Mary looked across the fields.

"When I was little, I dreamed that one day someone would admit what happened."

She paused.

"Now they have."

Elena wiped away a tear.

"Does that change anything?"

Mary smiled sadly.

"It changes the future."

The past would always remain.

The pain would always leave its mark.

But truth had finally replaced silence.

As Elena walked away, children laughed outside the new school, unaware of the decades of suffering that had made their future possible.

Mary watched them with quiet hope.

Justice had arrived later than it should have.

Yet it had arrived.

The End.
