Chapter 2: The Door That Was Never Locked

The silence didn’t break.

It detonated.

The penthouse doors flew open so hard they slammed against the marble walls.

Men in dark suits flooded inside.

Not guests.

Not security.

Federal agents.

“Hands where we can see them!” one of them shouted.

Time fractured.

The mistress stepped back instantly. “What is this?!”

He didn’t move at first.

Didn’t believe it was real.

Until one agent walked straight up to him.

“Mark Ellison,” the agent said firmly, “you are under arrest for federal financial fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy.”

The handcuffs came out.

Metal flashed.

“No,” he snapped, suddenly awake. “This is a mistake. Do you know who I am?”

Click.

The sound answered him.

The wife didn’t move.

She just watched.

Quiet.

Still.

Alive in a way she hadn’t been seconds ago.

The mistress screamed, backing away as agents moved in. “I didn’t do anything! I don’t know anything!”

No one listened.

The man who had once laughed at his wife’s tears finally felt something unfamiliar crawl into his voice.

Fear.

“What evidence?” he demanded. “Who authorized this?!”

The agent nodded toward the floor.

And everything stopped.
