CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN DAMIAN NEVER SAW COMING

CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN DAMIAN NEVER SAW COMING

The name on the document made the entire room silent.

Victoria Ashford.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

My father looked as though someone had struck him.

My mother whispered the name.

“No.”

I turned toward her.

“You know her.”

My mother didn't answer.

“Mom.”

She finally looked at me.

“She was my closest friend.”

My twin stared at the document.

“Victoria Ashford died twenty-two years ago.”

Arthur shook his head.

“According to the records, yes.”

“Then how did she sign this three days ago?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at the signature again.

It was unmistakably hers.

And beneath it was a sentence that made my stomach tighten.

The final transfer will occur when Isabella Montrose is legally removed from the succession.

My father slowly sat down.

“She found us.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“Victoria.”

THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED

My mother finally told me the truth.

Victoria Ashford had once been the most trusted person in the Montrose organization.

She had access to everything.

Bank accounts.

Trust structures.

Family records.

Security systems.

She knew every secret.

And she had one obsession.

The Montrose inheritance.

“She wanted your grandfather's position,” my mother said.

“And he refused.”

“Yes.”

“So she betrayed him.”

“She tried.”

My father interrupted.

“She didn't simply try.”

He looked at the document.

“She nearly succeeded.”

Twenty-two years earlier, Victoria had created a secret subsidiary.

A company that didn't officially belong to Montrose Global.

It was designed to move assets without triggering the trust's safeguards.

Billions flowed through it.

Then Victoria disappeared.

Everyone believed she died.

But she hadn't.

She had been waiting.

Waiting for the right heir.

Waiting for the right moment.

Waiting for the family to become vulnerable.

And apparently—

that moment had arrived.

THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE COAT

We returned to Montrose Global before noon.

Security had doubled.

Every entrance was sealed.

Arthur personally reviewed every employee entering the building.

But the enemy was already inside.

At exactly 11:40 a.m., the elevator doors opened.

A woman stepped out.

White coat.

Silver hair.

Black gloves.

She looked to be in her late sixties.

She walked directly toward me.

No security guard stopped her.

Arthur immediately reached for his phone.

“Who is she?”

The woman smiled.

“Isabella.”

I froze.

I knew that voice.

Not personally.

From the recordings.

Victoria.

She removed her gloves.

Then her glasses.

My mother went pale.

“Victoria.”

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

My mother stepped backward.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

“I was.”

Victoria looked at me.

“Until your family needed a ghost.”

THE WOMAN DAMIAN NEVER SAW

Damian had always believed he knew exactly who I was.

He believed I was an inexperienced wife.

A quiet woman who depended on his family.

He never saw what existed behind me.

But Victoria did.

She walked past everyone and stopped in front of me.

“You've grown.”

I stared at her.

“You've been watching me.”

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother asked me to.”

My mother looked shocked.

“I never asked you.”

Victoria smiled.

“You did.”

“When?”

“The night you gave birth.”

My mother froze.

“You remember.”

“I remember everything.”

Victoria looked at me.

“You were born with a genetic condition that made you uniquely identifiable within the Montrose bloodline.”

I frowned.

“What condition?”

“Not a disease.”

She smiled.

“A marker.”

“The same marker that allows the trust to recognize you.”

I looked at my twin.

“And her?”

“Same.”

“Amelia?”

“Same.”

“Rosalie?”

Victoria's expression changed.

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

“So why did you want us separated?”

Victoria smiled.

“I didn't.”

I stared.

“Then who did?”

She looked toward my father.

He looked away.

THE SECOND BETRAYAL

My father finally spoke.

“I made a deal.”

My mother's face turned white.

“With Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

My father looked at me.

“I promised her access to the trust.”

“Why?”

“To save your life.”

I couldn't believe it.

“Everyone keeps saying they lied to protect me.”

My voice broke.

“But every lie created another enemy.”

My father lowered his head.

“I know.”

“What did you give her?”

“Authority over the international assets.”

“And what did she give you?”

“Protection.”

“From Victor?”

“Yes.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So everyone was protecting me.”

“No.”

Victoria interrupted.

“They were protecting themselves.”

The room became silent.

She looked at me.

“That's what you need to understand.”

“Your family didn't create the system to protect you.”

“They created it because they were afraid of what would happen if you ever controlled it.”

I stared at her.

“What would happen?”

“You would see everything.”

“What everything?”

“The money.”

“The crimes.”

“The names.”

“The people who bought your marriage.”

“The people who ordered your father's disappearance.”

“The people who tried to kill Rosalie.”

She stepped closer.

“And the person who ordered your mother's death.”

My breath caught.

“My mother?”

Victoria nodded.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to survive the shooting.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BULLET

My mother touched her chest.

“The bullet missed my heart.”

“No,” Victoria said.

“It wasn't supposed to.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria looked at me.

“The shooter was ordered to scare her.”

“By whom?”

“Your husband.”

I froze.

“Damian?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Victoria handed Arthur a file.

“Open page twelve.”

Arthur did.

His face changed.

“Payment authorization.”

I took the file.

The transaction was clear.

Damian Cross → Private Security Contractor

Amount:

$4,000,000.

Purpose:

Permanent containment of Evelyn Montrose.

I looked at my mother.

“Damian tried to kill you?”

She shook her head.

“He didn't know who I was.”

“What?”

“He believed I was an enemy of the Cross family.”

Victoria smiled sadly.

“That was the brilliance of the plan.”

Damian had been manipulated.

Evelyn had been manipulated.

Even Victor had been manipulated.

Everyone believed they were playing their own game.

But someone had been moving all of them.

THE REAL ENEMY

Arthur suddenly looked at the building's security dashboard.

“Isabella.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

Every camera inside Montrose Global went black.

One after another.

Floor by floor.

Security doors opened automatically.

Elevators began moving without authorization.

Then the main screen displayed one sentence.

HELLO, ISABELLA.

My twin stepped forward.

“Victoria?”

“No.”

Victoria looked genuinely frightened.

“I don't know who that is.”

Another sentence appeared.

YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.

Then:

CHOOSE WHICH EMPIRE SURVIVES.

I looked at Victoria.

“You knew this was coming.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

The screen changed again.

A live image appeared.

Damian.

He was sitting in a prison interrogation room.

His hands were cuffed.

A man stood behind him.

I recognized him immediately.

Richard Cross.

Dead according to every official record.

But alive.

Richard leaned toward Damian.

“Tell her.”

Damian looked directly into the camera.

“Isabella…”

His voice was barely audible.

“Don't trust Victoria.”

The screen went black.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WOMAN

I turned toward Victoria.

“You said you didn't know.”

“I don't.”

“Then why did Damian warn me about you?”

“Because he doesn't know the truth.”

“What truth?”

Victoria looked at my mother.

Then my father.

Finally, she looked at me.

“I was never working against your family.”

“Then what were you doing?”

“Keeping you alive.”

I didn't believe her.

She reached into her coat.

Arthur immediately raised his weapon.

“Slowly.”

Victoria pulled out a photograph.

She handed it to me.

It showed my mother.

Holding three babies.

I stared.

“Where did you get this?”

“My archive.”

My hands trembled.

The photograph was dated the day I was born.

But there was something wrong.

There were not three babies.

There were four.

One had been cut out.

I looked at Victoria.

“Who was the fourth?”

She whispered:

“Damian's sister.”

I froze.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

Victoria's voice became cold.

“She was the first child Victor took.”

“And she is the reason Damian became obsessed with the Montrose family.”

My mind raced.

Damian had never mentioned having a sister.

Not once.

“What happened to her?”

Victoria looked toward the screen.

“She survived.”

My heart stopped.

“Where is she?”

Victoria answered:

“She became Vanessa Hale.”

VANESSA'S REAL NAME

I couldn't breathe.

“Vanessa?”

Victoria nodded.

“Her real name is Clara Cross.”

My twin whispered:

“That's why she knew Damian's secrets.”

“Yes.”

“That's why she knew Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“That's why she was always close to the family.”

“Yes.”

I remembered Vanessa's smile.

Her perfect dresses.

Her confidence.

The way she always seemed to know more than she should.

She hadn't been Damian's mistress.

Not entirely.

She had been investigating her own family.

Victoria continued.

“Vanessa discovered the truth six years ago.”

“Then why did she stay with Damian?”

“Because Damian was the only person she trusted.”

My mother whispered:

“She loved her brother.”

Victoria nodded.

“And Damian never knew she was his sister.”

I closed my eyes.

Everything had been a lie.

Again.

THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO THE PRISON

We went to the prison that evening.

Damian was waiting.

He looked different.

Smaller.

Broken.

He stared through the glass.

“I didn't know.”

I sat across from him.

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

“I don't deserve that.”

“No.”

He lowered his head.

“I thought Vanessa betrayed me.”

“She did.”

He looked up.

“She saved you.”

“What?”

“She was trying to expose Evelyn.”

Damian laughed bitterly.

“I hated her.”

“You hated everyone.”

He looked at me.

“I loved you.”

I stared at him.

“You loved what you thought I was.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You're right.”

Silence.

Then he asked:

“Is Rosalie safe?”

“Yes.”

He exhaled.

“Good.”

I stood.

“Why did you order the attack on my mother?”

His face changed.

“I didn't.”

“The payment came from your account.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

He shook his head.

“I never authorized it.”

“Someone used your identity.”

He stared at me.

“Who?”

I leaned closer.

“Your sister.”

His eyes widened.

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

I whispered:

“Clara.”

Damian's face went completely white.

THE FINAL MESSAGE

Before we left, Damian grabbed my hand.

“Isabella.”

I turned.

“There is something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Your grandfather isn't dead.”

I froze.

“My grandfather?”

“Edmund Montrose.”

I stared at him.

“He's alive.”

“Where?”

Damian looked toward the security camera.

“Inside Montrose Global.”

My blood ran cold.

“That isn't possible.”

Damian smiled sadly.

“You keep thinking the dead are dead.”

He leaned closer.

“That's your family's favorite lie.”

The prison lights suddenly went out.

A message appeared on the glass.

ONE HOUR.

Then another.

COME TO THE ROOFTOP.

And beneath it—

COME ALONE, ISABELLA.

I looked at Damian.

He whispered:

“Don't go.”

I asked:

“Why?”

His answer chilled me.

“Because that's where my sister was killed.”

I stepped away from the glass.

For the first time, I understood something.

The Cross empire had fallen.

But the person who had controlled the Crosses was still alive.

And they weren't hiding anymore.

They were calling me directly.

I walked out of the prison.

My phone vibrated.

One new message.

No number.

Only a photograph.

It showed me standing beside Rosalie.

Taken from inside my own house.

The message beneath it contained five words:

I KNOW WHERE YOU SLEEP.

I stopped walking.

Then another message arrived.

AND I KNOW WHAT YOU LOVE.

My blood ran cold.

Because the final photograph wasn't of Rosalie.

It was of my twin.

May you like

Standing alone.

With a gun pressed against her head.
