CHAPTER 4 — VANESSA'S PERFECT REPLACEMENT

CHAPTER 4 — VANESSA'S PERFECT REPLACEMENT
By eight o'clock the next morning, Vanessa Hale was no longer hiding.
She was walking through the front doors of Cross Holdings as though she already owned the building.
That was the first mistake.
The second was believing I wouldn't know.
I watched her through the security feed from the forty-ninth floor of Montrose Global.
Scarlet coat.
Black heels.
Dark sunglasses.
A diamond bracelet I had never seen before.
She walked beside Damian as if the previous night had never happened.
As if she had not watched him hit me.
As if she had not laughed when he ordered me to kneel.
As if she had not stolen the emerald necklace.
And as if she had not spent the previous evening meeting privately with my mother-in-law.
My father's security chief stood beside me.
“Do you want her removed?”
“No.”
He looked surprised.
“Why not?”
“Because I want to see what she thinks she's here to take.”
THE NEW MRS. CROSS
Vanessa entered the executive floor at 8:13.
The receptionist stood immediately.
“Good morning, Mr. Cross.”
Damian walked past without answering.
Vanessa stopped.
“From now on, you can call me Mrs. Cross.”
The receptionist froze.
Damian turned.
“Vanessa.”
“What?”
“Don't.”
She smiled.
“Why?”
“Because you're not my wife.”
Her expression hardened.
“Not yet.”
The receptionist looked down.
Damian lowered his voice.
“This isn't the time.”
“When will it be?”
“When this is over.”
She laughed.
“That's exactly what you told me six months ago.”
Damian's face tightened.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because people are watching.”
Vanessa glanced around.
“Let them.”
She walked into his office.
Damian followed.
The door closed.
Neither of them noticed the tiny camera above the bookshelf.
Neither of them knew the security system had been integrated into Montrose's network the previous night.
And neither of them knew I was watching.
THE WOMAN WHO WANTED MY LIFE
Vanessa dropped her handbag onto Damian's desk.
“You're going to marry me.”
Damian stared at her.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
“This isn't happening.”
“You told me it would.”
“Things have changed.”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Your wife owns your company.”
Damian said nothing.
“She owns your house.”
Nothing.
“Your bank accounts.”
Nothing.
“Your investments.”
He looked away.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“And now she's taking your name.”
Damian's jaw clenched.
“You don't understand.”
“No.”
Her voice became colder.
“I understand perfectly.”
She pulled a document from her handbag.
“You need a new public image.”
Damian looked at it.
“What is that?”
“A marriage announcement.”
He stared.
“You're insane.”
“Am I?”
She placed another document on the desk.
“This is a preliminary agreement for the transfer of Cross family assets.”
Damian's eyes narrowed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your mother.”
He looked up sharply.
“Evelyn gave you this?”
“Yes.”
“What does she want?”
Vanessa smiled.
“She wants me to become the new Mrs. Cross.”
Damian laughed bitterly.
“You think marriage fixes this?”
“No.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“I think the right marriage gives us leverage.”
Damian stared at her.
“What leverage?”
She whispered:
“Against Isabella.”
THE PLAN
Vanessa explained it carefully.
The media already knew about Isabella.
They knew she was wealthy.
They knew she had secretly funded Cross Holdings.
But they didn't know everything.
Vanessa intended to change that.
“She has a weakness,” Vanessa said.
Damian shook his head.
“She doesn't.”
“Everyone has one.”
“Not her.”
“You're wrong.”
She opened her phone.
“I've spent four years studying her.”
Damian looked at her.
“What did you find?”
“She hates public attention.”
He said nothing.
“She doesn't like interviews.”
Nothing.
“She doesn't want her private life exposed.”
Still nothing.
Vanessa smiled.
“And she has never publicly admitted that she owns the company.”
Damian slowly understood.
“So?”
“So we make her look unstable.”
“How?”
“We tell the media that she used her family's wealth to manipulate you.”
Damian frowned.
“That won't work.”
“It will if we provide evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Vanessa looked directly into his eyes.
“Your wife has spent years secretly controlling Cross Holdings.”
“Yes.”
“That sounds like corporate interference.”
“She was protecting the company.”
“That's not how the public will see it.”
Damian stared at her.
She continued.
“We say she deceived you.”
“She did.”
“We say she married you under a false identity.”
“She did.”
“We say she secretly controlled your business.”
“She did.”
“We say she used her family's money to force you into financial dependence.”
Damian slowly leaned back.
For the first time, he saw the shape of her plan.
It was disgusting.
It was also clever.
And it had one fatal flaw.
They were telling the truth badly.
THE INTERVIEW
At 10:00 a.m., Vanessa contacted a journalist.
Her name was Lauren Pierce.
A respected financial reporter.
Lauren arrived at a private hotel suite in downtown San Francisco.
Vanessa sat across from her.
“I want to tell the truth.”
Lauren opened her notebook.
“About Isabella Montrose?”
“Yes.”
“Your former friend's wife?”
Vanessa smiled.
“She isn't what people think.”
Lauren raised an eyebrow.
“Go on.”
Vanessa leaned forward.
“She manipulated Damian for years.”
“Do you have evidence?”
“Yes.”
She placed a folder on the table.
Inside were financial documents.
Some genuine.
Some misleading.
And some deliberately altered.
Lauren studied them.
“This appears serious.”
“It is.”
“What happened between you and Damian?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I never wanted to hurt Isabella.”
Lauren watched her.
“She attacked me.”
“Physically?”
“No.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“She destroyed my relationship.”
Lauren's expression softened.
“Were you involved with Damian before his marriage ended?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Six months.”
Lauren wrote it down.
“And Isabella knew?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“She knew something was wrong.”
Then she whispered:
“But she didn't know how far we had gone.”
Lauren closed the folder.
“Why are you telling me this now?”
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
“Because I don't want another woman to be destroyed by someone who believes money makes her untouchable.”
The interview ended.
Vanessa smiled.
She believed she had won.
She didn't know Lauren Pierce had already sent the documents to Montrose legal.
THE WOMAN WHO LET HER TALK
I watched the interview in silence.
My father sat across from me.
“You're not angry.”
“No.”
“You should be.”
“Why?”
“She's lying.”
“Some of it.”
“Most of it.”
I shook my head.
“That's not the problem.”
“What is?”
“She thinks she's smarter than me.”
My father smiled.
“That can be useful.”
I looked at him.
“Very.”
The general counsel entered.
“We have completed our verification.”
“And?”
“Several documents Vanessa supplied to the reporter were altered.”
“Can we prove it?”
“Yes.”
“Publicly?”
“Easily.”
I stood.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Don't release anything.”
He looked confused.
“Why?”
“Let the interview run.”
“But the allegations could damage your reputation.”
“They won't.”
“How can you be certain?”
I looked at my father.
“Because Vanessa doesn't know the difference between exposing me and exposing herself.”
THE PERFECT REPLACEMENT
By noon, the interview was everywhere.
News channels repeated Vanessa's claims.
Social media exploded.
DAMIAN CROSS'S MISTRESS ACCUSES HIS WIFE OF CORPORATE MANIPULATION
ISABELLA MONTROSE — VICTIM OR FINANCIAL PUPPET MASTER?
THE SECRET MARRIAGE BEHIND CROSS HOLDINGS
People debated.
Some defended me.
Others attacked me.
For the first time, the public saw Vanessa.
And Vanessa loved it.
She appeared on television again.
Then another interview.
Then another.
Every time, she repeated the same story.
She was the innocent woman.
I was the manipulator.
Damian was the victim.
Evelyn was the betrayed mother.
It was almost perfect.
Almost.
Then one reporter asked Vanessa a question she hadn't prepared for.
“Ms. Hale, if Isabella Montrose was manipulating Cross Holdings, why did Damian continue accepting billions of dollars from her family's companies?”
Vanessa froze.
Just for half a second.
But the camera caught it.
“I—I don't know.”
“Did you know about the financing?”
“No.”
“Did Damian?”
“I don't know.”
“Did you personally benefit from Montrose funds?”
“No.”
Another pause.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
That was the lie that destroyed her.
Because Montrose had the bank records.
THE TRANSFER
At 3:20 p.m., Marcus entered my office.
“We found it.”
I looked up.
“Found what?”
“The transfer.”
He placed a file on my desk.
Vanessa's name was on the first page.
“Three months ago, $6.8 million was transferred into an account controlled by Vanessa.”
“From where?”
“Cross Holdings.”
I frowned.
“That's not unusual.”
Marcus opened another page.
“The money originally came from M Holdings.”
I went still.
“Montrose.”
“Yes.”
“Who authorized it?”
“Damian.”
“Why?”
“That is the interesting part.”
He turned the page.
The transfer was labeled:
CONSULTING SERVICES — STRATEGIC TRANSITION
I stared.
“Transition to what?”
Marcus looked at me.
“Ownership.”
I felt a cold sensation in my chest.
“Whose ownership?”
“Vanessa Hale.”
Silence.
Damian had been planning to transfer part of the company to Vanessa.
Using money that belonged to me.
He wasn't simply cheating on me.
He had been preparing my replacement financially.
THE SECOND DOCUMENT
Marcus opened another folder.
“This is worse.”
Inside was a draft shareholder agreement.
Damian's signature.
Vanessa's signature.
Evelyn's signature.
The agreement stated that after Damian's divorce, Vanessa would receive a controlling interest in several Cross subsidiaries.
I read the percentages.
My hands tightened.
“Twenty-eight percent.”
“Yes.”
“That's enough to block certain decisions.”
“Yes.”
“And if combined with Evelyn's shares?”
“Forty-six percent.”
I looked at Marcus.
“Close to control.”
“Exactly.”
I closed the folder.
They weren't simply replacing me as Damian's wife.
They were trying to replace me as the person who controlled the money.
And they had planned it long before last night's dinner.
EVELYN'S FINAL INSTRUCTION
At 6:00 p.m., Evelyn called Vanessa.
“You did well.”
Vanessa smiled.
“I told you.”
“Now we proceed.”
“What happens next?”
“Damian files for divorce.”
“And then?”
“You become his wife.”
Vanessa's smile widened.
“And Isabella?”
Evelyn paused.
“She will lose everything.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“What about Montrose?”
Evelyn's voice became quiet.
“That's why we have the necklace.”
Vanessa looked toward the emerald pendant sitting on the table.
“What does it actually do?”
“You don't need to know.”
“I want to.”
Evelyn became irritated.
“You ask too many questions.”
Vanessa picked up the necklace.
“I risked everything stealing this.”
“You were paid.”
“Six million dollars isn't enough.”
Evelyn's voice hardened.
“Be careful.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You need me.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn said something Vanessa hadn't expected.
“No.”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“I need the necklace.”
The call ended.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
For the first time, she wondered whether Evelyn had ever intended to let her become Mrs. Cross.
THE WOMAN IN THE SHADOW
At 8:40 p.m., Vanessa left the hotel.
A black sedan followed her.
She didn't notice.
The sedan followed her for six blocks.
Then another vehicle joined.
Inside the first car, a man made a phone call.
“She has the necklace.”
The voice on the other end asked:
“Does she know what it is?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“What about Isabella?”
“She hasn't discovered the second key.”
The man hesitated.
“And Damian?”
A pause.
“Damian is expendable.”
The line disconnected.
MY DECISION
At 10:00 p.m., I stood in the Montrose vault.
The emerald necklace was still missing.
The security breach remained unexplained.
Alexander remained somewhere in the shadows.
And Vanessa was now publicly positioning herself as Damian's replacement.
My father stood beside me.
“You can destroy them tonight.”
I looked at him.
“I know.”
“Then why haven't you?”
“Because I want to know who is behind them.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
I looked at the security footage.
Vanessa entering Cross Holdings.
Damian meeting her.
Evelyn handing her documents.
Then something caught my eye.
A frame.
A man standing behind Evelyn.
I froze.
“Stop.”
The technician paused the footage.
“Zoom in.”
The image sharpened.
My heart stopped.
I knew that face.
Not personally.
From photographs.
Old family photographs.
The man standing behind Evelyn was older now.
His hair was gray.
His face was thinner.
But the resemblance was unmistakable.
My father's brother.
Alexander Montrose.
Alive.
And standing inside the Cross mansion.
I turned toward my father.
“Dad.”
He looked at the screen.
His face went completely still.
“How long has he been there?”
“I don't know.”
“When was this recorded?”
“Three days ago.”
My father whispered:
“Then he's already inside the family.”
I stared at the screen.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Vanessa wasn't the mastermind.
Evelyn wasn't the mastermind.
Damian certainly wasn't.
They were pieces.
Useful pieces.
Disposable pieces.
And Alexander had been moving them into position for years.
I turned away from the monitor.
“What do we do?”
My father looked at me.
“We wait.”
“For what?”
“For Alexander to make his first real move.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He frowned.
“No?”
“I've waited long enough.”
I walked toward the vault door.
“Tomorrow morning, I want every Cross account audited.”
“All of them?”
“All.”
“International?”
“Yes.”
“Personal?”
“Yes.”
“Private trusts?”
“Yes.”
My father smiled.
“And Damian?”
I stopped.
“Leave him one account.”
“Why?”
I looked over my shoulder.
“Because I want him to believe he still has money.”
My father understood immediately.
“You're setting a trap.”
“No.”
I smiled.
“I'm giving him a reason to walk into one.”
THE LAST CALL
At 11:58 p.m., Damian received an anonymous message.
There is still one account Isabella cannot freeze.
He stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
If you want your empire back, come alone tomorrow.
Then an address.
Damian looked at it.
His face changed.
Because the address belonged to an abandoned Montrose property.
He didn't know why.
He didn't know who had sent it.
But he knew one thing.
Someone was offering him a way out.
And desperate men rarely ask who built the door.
They simply walk through it.
Across the city, I stood beside my father and watched the same message appear on a separate security screen.
My father looked at me.
“Did you send it?”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“Then Alexander did.”
I stared at the address.
My pulse quickened.
“What does he want Damian to find?”
My father answered quietly:
“Probably the same thing he wants you to find.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
I looked toward the dark city.
“And if Damian gets there first?”
My father smiled without humor.
“Then tomorrow, Isabella, your husband will finally discover why the first account they lost was never really the important one.”
The lights of San Francisco glittered below us.
Somewhere in that darkness, Damian was walking toward a trap.
May you like
And for the first time since I left him, I wasn't certain whether I wanted to save him from it.
Or watch him fall.
