CHAPTER 1 — THE BROKEN HOUSE

CHAPTER 1 — THE BROKEN HOUSE

Emma didn’t speak for two days.

She stayed close to Christopher, even when she slept—small hands gripping his sleeve like letting go might make the world repeat itself.

The house had changed.

But not enough.

Because silence still carried memory.

Every hallway felt like it remembered Juliette’s heels.

Every reflection in the glass reminded Christopher of what he almost missed.

On the third morning, Yvette knocked on the study door.

“Sir,” she said carefully, “there’s something you need to see.”

She placed a thin folder on the desk.

Inside were transfer drafts.

Legal structures.

And communications between Estelle’s private attorney and offshore accounts tied to “child guardianship adjustments.”

Christopher’s jaw tightened as he read.

“They weren’t just trying to remove Emma from the will,” Yvette said quietly. “They were preparing to erase her legal existence within the family structure entirely.”

Christopher didn’t answer.

Because he finally understood something worse than betrayal.

This had been organized.

Long before Juliette ever pushed Emma into the pool.

A system had been built around removing her.

Quietly.

Legally.

Permanently.

And Estelle had been at the center of it.

From the beginning.

That night, Emma woke up screaming.

Not loud.

Just broken.

Christopher rushed into her room and held her while she shook.

“It was water,” she whispered. “I couldn’t breathe—”

“I know,” he said softly. “You’re here. You’re safe.”

But her eyes kept darting to the window.

Like she expected someone to still be watching.

Christopher realized something then.

May you like

This wasn’t trauma that faded with safety.

This was trauma that followed safety inside it.
