Chapter 3: The Price of Power

The ballroom doors remained locked.

Not to punish the innocent.

But to preserve every witness until the authorities arrived.

The attacker's father, Victor Ashford, pushed through the crowd.

"My son made a mistake."

"We can settle this privately."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Violence isn't a business negotiation."

"It doesn't disappear because someone is wealthy."

Victor lowered his voice.

"Name your price."

A quiet laugh escaped Evelyn.

"My price?"

She gestured toward the screen, where the assault replayed once more.

"My price is accountability."

At that moment, another set of doors opened.

Police detectives entered the ballroom, accompanied by prosecutors who had already been investigating the Ashford family for corruption.

The assault had become the final piece they needed.

Several guests quietly stepped forward.

One by one, they admitted they had witnessed similar incidents in the past but had remained silent out of fear.

The silence protecting the Ashford family finally broke.

As officers placed handcuffs on the young man, he stared at Evelyn.

"You ruined my life."

She answered calmly.

"No."

"You ruined it the moment you believed your power placed you above the law."

The officers escorted him away.
