Chapter 2 — The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

Chapter 2 — The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable
By midnight, the ballroom was empty.
The champagne had stopped flowing.
The orchestra had packed away its instruments.
The guests who had spent the evening laughing beneath crystal chandeliers were now being escorted through the mansion's front gates one by one.
Some refused to look at me.
Others did.
But none of them said anything.
Because they had finally discovered the truth.
The woman they had watched bleed was not powerless.
She had simply been patient.
I stood beneath the mansion's enormous entrance archway, watching the last black sedan disappear into the night.
My father stood beside me.
He hadn't spoken much since arriving.
He didn't need to.
His silence said enough.
Finally, he looked at me.
"Do you want to go home?"
I shook my head.
"Not yet."
His eyes moved toward the mansion.
"You're sure?"
I nodded.
"There are still things inside."
He knew exactly what I meant.
Evidence.
Records.
People.
And Damian.
The man who had spent his entire life believing no one could touch him.
Tonight, that belief was about to die.
The Holding Room
Damian was being held in a private security room on the lower floor while investigators prepared the formal transfer.
He had no phone.
No watch.
No lawyer.
No friends.
No family.
For the first time in his life, there was no one around him willing to tell him what to say.
When I entered, he looked up.
The arrogance was gone.
But not completely.
There was still something dangerous behind his eyes.
"You came."
I pulled out a chair and sat across from him.
"I wanted to see you."
He laughed bitterly.
"To enjoy this?"
"No."
"Then why?"
"Because tomorrow you'll have lawyers."
He frowned.
"Tonight, I want the truth."
He leaned back.
"You think I'll confess?"
"No."
I placed a folder on the table.
"I think you'll lie."
His eyes narrowed.
"Then why ask?"
"Because every lie you tell me will give me another piece of the truth."
He stared at me.
Then slowly smiled.
"You've changed."
I looked at him.
"No."
I shook my head.
"You just finally stopped controlling what I was allowed to see."
The First Question
I opened the folder.
"Let's start with the night we met."
Damian frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I want to know when this began."
"What?"
"The plan."
He remained silent.
I continued.
"Was I supposed to marry you?"
His expression changed.
"You knew?"
"I asked you a question."
He looked away.
Finally:
"Yes."
The answer didn't hurt.
Not anymore.
I had already known.
But hearing it from him made the betrayal real.
"Who arranged it?"
"My father."
"Why?"
"Your inheritance."
I stared at him.
"And you agreed."
He didn't answer.
"You agreed to marry me because of my family's money."
"It wasn't that simple."
"Then explain it."
He sighed.
"My father said your family was vulnerable."
"Vulnerable?"
"He believed your father would eventually retire."
"And then?"
"I would become your husband."
"So you could control my assets."
"Yes."
The word was barely audible.
I closed the folder.
"Thank you."
He looked confused.
"For what?"
"For finally telling me something you should have told me five years ago."
The Second Question
I opened another file.
"Did you ever love me?"
He looked at me for a long time.
"I don't know."
That answer surprised me.
"That's honest."
"I did love you."
"At the beginning?"
"Yes."
"And then?"
His jaw tightened.
"Then my father kept reminding me who you were."
"Who was I?"
"The daughter of the man who had ruined our family."
I frowned.
"Your father believed that?"
"He believed your father stole everything from him."
"And you believed him?"
"I was twenty-seven."
He looked down.
"I believed everything my father told me."
I leaned back.
"Until when?"
"Until I realized you knew more than I did."
He looked up.
"When did you discover that?"
"Three years ago."
"So you knew I was investigating you."
"Yes."
"And you still stayed married to me."
He laughed without humor.
"By then, I couldn't leave."
"Why?"
"Because your trust had already become the largest obstacle to my family's plan."
I stared at him.
"What did you do?"
He looked away.
"I tried to manipulate the trustees."
My blood ran cold.
"You tried to steal my inheritance."
"Yes."
"How?"
He didn't answer.
I opened another document.
"Through the Blackwood Foundation?"
His eyes widened.
"How do you know?"
I smiled.
"Because I own the foundation."
His expression collapsed.
The Hidden Ownership
Damian stared at me.
"You don't."
"I do."
"That foundation belonged to my father."
"Your father thought it did."
I pulled out a certificate.
The controlling shares had been transferred years ago.
Through a trust.
One my father had established before I was born.
Damian's father had unknowingly signed agreements that gave my family control over the organization.
He had believed he was acquiring power.
He had actually been surrendering it.
Damian stared at the document.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"How?"
"My father taught me to read contracts."
He laughed bitterly.
"Of course he did."
Then his expression changed.
"You've been planning this."
I shook my head.
"I've been protecting myself."
The Phone Call
A knock sounded at the door.
My father's chief attorney entered.
"Ms. Vale."
I stood.
"What happened?"
"Three banks have frozen Blackwood accounts."
Damian immediately looked up.
"What?"
The attorney continued.
"Two holding companies have suspended all transactions."
Damian stood abruptly.
"That's impossible."
"The Blackwood Energy account is frozen."
"That's impossible."
"The Blackwood Foundation is under investigation."
"You're lying."
"The private aviation company has suspended access."
Damian's breathing became heavier.
"Call my father."
The attorney looked at me.
I nodded.
The attorney continued.
"Your father's personal accounts are also restricted."
Damian's face went white.
He grabbed the edge of the table.
"You can't do this."
I looked at him.
"I didn't."
He stared at me.
"Then who did?"
"My father."
Alexander Vale
The door opened.
My father entered.
Damian immediately stepped forward.
"You can't destroy my family."
My father stopped several feet away.
"I don't intend to."
Damian laughed.
"Look at what you've done."
"I've frozen assets."
"You've destroyed everything."
"No."
My father looked at him.
"You did that when you assaulted my daughter."
Damian clenched his fists.
"You think this is justice?"
"No."
My father's voice remained calm.
"This is the beginning of justice."
Damian looked toward me.
"Elena."
I didn't answer.
He took a step closer.
"Tell him to stop."
I shook my head.
"I can't."
"Can't?"
"No."
I looked him directly in the eyes.
"I won't."
The Man Behind the Curtain
My father placed a tablet on the table.
A video began playing.
Damian's father appeared.
He was in a private office.
Speaking with several men.
"Once Elena signs the marriage agreement, her trust becomes accessible."
Another man asked:
"What if she refuses?"
Damian's father laughed.
"She won't."
The room went silent.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"If necessary, we'll make her dependent on Damian."
I felt something cold move through me.
My father watched my reaction.
He had known.
He had seen this before.
But I hadn't.
The video continued.
"Her father won't interfere."
"Why?"
"Because he knows the marriage will give Elena a normal life."
I laughed.
A terrible, empty laugh.
Normal life.
They had planned to trap me.
Then the recording revealed something else.
A second voice.
Damian's.
"You don't have to worry."
I froze.
His younger voice filled the room.
"I'll make sure she stays."
The video stopped.
Silence.
I looked at Damian.
He couldn't meet my eyes.
"I Was Young"
"I was young."
His voice was barely audible.
I stared at him.
"You were twenty-seven."
"I was scared."
"You were willing."
"My father threatened me."
"With what?"
"My inheritance."
I shook my head.
"You chose money."
He didn't respond.
"You chose your father."
Still nothing.
"You chose to make me dependent."
His eyes filled with tears.
"And then you became the person I was supposed to depend on."
He looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I stood.
"You're not sorry."
He swallowed.
"You regret being caught."
His expression collapsed.
Maybe I was wrong.
Maybe he was sorry.
But it didn't matter anymore.
An apology couldn't undo five years.
The Escape Attempt
At 1:43 a.m., the mansion's alarm sounded.
Everyone turned.
A security officer rushed into the room.
"He's gone."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
"Damian."
My father immediately stood.
"How?"
"The holding room door was opened remotely."
The attorney looked at the security logs.
"No."
He frowned.
"Someone used an administrator access code."
My father looked at me.
"Who has access?"
I thought about it.
Then I remembered.
"Damian's brother."
My father shook his head.
"He's overseas."
I looked at the security cameras.
"Not anymore."
We ran.
The Underground Garage
We reached the garage.
A black SUV was already moving toward the exit.
I recognized it.
Damian's private vehicle.
My father shouted:
"Stop the gate!"
The massive garage door began descending.
The SUV accelerated.
For one terrible second, I thought he would make it.
Then—
CRASH.
The vehicle slammed into the security barrier.
Airbags exploded.
Security officers surrounded the car.
The driver's door opened.
Damian stumbled out.
Blood ran down his forehead.
He looked toward me.
And smiled.
"You really thought that would stop me?"
I stared at him.
"No."
I walked closer.
"I knew you'd try."
His smile disappeared.
Then I raised my phone.
"Because I needed you to."
His eyes widened.
Behind me, the attorney held up a tablet.
The remote access logs were displayed.
Damian had used a hidden administrator account.
The account was connected to an offshore server.
And that server had just exposed the location of every Blackwood shell company.
Damian stared at the screen.
"You used me."
I nodded.
"You gave me exactly what I needed."
The Second Betrayal
Then someone behind Damian shouted.
"Mr. Blackwood!"
We turned.
It was his closest friend.
The same man who had laughed when Damian attacked me.
He was holding a briefcase.
"I have the documents."
Damian stared at him.
"What documents?"
"The ones you asked me to destroy."
The man handed them to my father.
Damian's expression became furious.
"You idiot!"
His friend stepped backward.
"You said you were going to protect me."
Damian lunged.
Security stopped him.
He screamed:
"You don't understand!"
I looked at him.
"No."
I said quietly.
"You're the one who doesn't understand."
The Blackwood Empire Falls
By three in the morning, the first financial institutions began issuing emergency notices.
Blackwood Holdings had lost access to its primary accounts.
Several subsidiaries were placed under temporary administration.
The family's private jet was grounded.
Their luxury vehicles were seized pending investigation.
Three senior executives resigned.
Two fled.
One turned himself in.
And Damian?
He was transferred into official custody.
This time, there would be no private security room.
No hidden access code.
No convenient escape.
As officers escorted him toward the waiting vehicle, he stopped.
He looked at me.
"Elena."
I remained silent.
"I really did love you."
I believed him.
That was the cruelest part.
Maybe he had loved me.
Maybe he still did.
But love without courage was useless.
Love without respect was poison.
And love that required someone to become smaller so another person could feel powerful—
wasn't love at all.
I looked at him.
"Goodbye, Damian."
His eyes filled with tears.
Then the car door closed.
The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable
The convoy disappeared into the darkness.
My father stood beside me.
"You okay?"
I looked at the mansion.
At the shattered champagne glasses.
At the blood that had stained the marble earlier.
At the steel doors that had started everything.
"Yes."
He looked surprised.
"Really?"
I smiled.
"Because tonight I finally understood something."
"What?"
I turned toward him.
"Damian never thought he was untouchable because he was strong."
My father waited.
"He thought he was untouchable because everyone around him was afraid."
I looked toward the road where his car had disappeared.
"Fear was his real protection."
"And now?"
"Now nobody is afraid."
My father nodded.
"Then it's over."
I shook my head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"It's only over for Damian."
I picked up the folder containing the remaining evidence.
"There are still people behind him."
My father smiled slightly.
"That's my daughter."
I looked toward the first pale light appearing beyond the horizon.
The night was ending.
But the war wasn't.
Because Damian Blackwood had been only the man standing in front of me.
Behind him was a family.
Behind that family were corporations.
Behind those corporations were politicians, bankers, lawyers, and people who had spent decades believing money could erase consequences.
They had watched Damian hurt me.
They had laughed.
They had looked away.
And now they were about to learn the same lesson.
The doors had closed.
Damian had fallen.
May you like
But the real secret was still waiting behind the next door.
And I was finally ready to open it.
