Chapter 2: Walking Away from What Hurts
Dinner continued in awkward silence.
Patricia barely touched her food.
Harold stared at his plate.
The rest of the family exchanged uneasy glances, unsure whose side to take.
Halfway through the meal, Patricia finally spoke.
"I was only trying to keep traditions."
Daniel set down his fork.
"Traditions that hurt children deserve to end."
She frowned.
"You've changed."
"You're right."
"I became the father Lily deserved."
Patricia looked toward Mason and Chloe, hoping they would support her.
Instead, sixteen-year-old Mason cleared his throat.
"Grandma..."
She looked relieved.
Until he continued.
"Lily is my little sister."
The room froze.
Chloe nodded.
"I've never thought of her as anything else."
Patricia's lips parted, but no words came.
Daniel smiled proudly at both of his older children.
"I'm glad someone learned what family means."
When dessert was served, Daniel stood.
"I think we're done here."
Confused murmurs spread across the room.
He calmly picked up the birthday cake.
"Come on, kids."
Emma grabbed the presents.
Mason carried the drinks.
Chloe collected the gift bags.
Lily proudly carried the handmade birthday card.
Together, the six of us walked out the front door.
No shouting.
No dramatic scene.
