CHAPTER 1: THE CALL THAT WASN’T ROUTINE

Daniel had answered hundreds of calls like this one.

Noise complaints. Suspicious movement. Reports that usually turned out to be nothing.

But the moment he turned into the narrow alley, something inside him already knew this wasn’t going to be routine.

The air smelled of damp cardboard and rain that hadn’t fully left the ground. Broken plastic rustled in the wind. And then he saw her.

A small figure.

Barefoot.

Dragging a black trash bag almost half her size.

But what made him stop breathing wasn’t the bag.

It was the way she held something against her chest—carefully, protectively, like it was more important than her own life.

A baby.

Wrapped in an old, faded cloth.

Sleeping.

May you like

Daniel’s hand instinctively went off his radio.

He didn’t even realize he had stopped walking.
