The ballroom doors opened.
Two attorneys entered, followed by the family's longtime accountant.
Each carried a leather portfolio.
The older attorney addressed Emily first.
"Ms. Carter."
"We have completed your father's final instructions."
Preston frowned.
"What is this?"
The attorney turned toward him.
"Mr. Preston Hale?"
"Yes."
"I'm afraid there is important information you were never told."
He placed a thick folder on the nearest table.
"For the last fifteen years, every major investment keeping Hale Development solvent was financed through Carter Holdings."
The room fell silent.
Preston laughed.
"Impossible."
"My father built this company."
