Chapter 2: What the Camera Saw

Chapter 2: What the Camera Saw
The footage came from a ceiling camera positioned directly above the private dining room.
Jonathan watched from the hospital waiting room.
Vivian sat across from him.
Silent.
Pale.
The recording played.
Guests mingled.
Servers moved between tables.
Emma smiled politely despite looking exhausted.
Then the image zoomed in.
Everyone watched.
Vivian approached the table carrying two wine glasses.
One for herself.
One for Emma.
Nothing unusual.
At first.
Then security slowed the video.
Frame by frame.
Vivian paused beside a floral arrangement.
Her hand disappeared briefly into her evening clutch.
Something tiny appeared between her fingers.
A capsule.
The room fell silent.
The footage showed her crushing the capsule beneath the table.
A powder dropped into Emma's glass.
Not her own.
Emma's.
Jonathan stared at the screen.
His face slowly emptied of color.
"No."
The footage continued.
Vivian stirred the wine gently.
Then walked directly to Emma.
Smiling.
Encouraging.
Insisting.
"Drink it."
The exact words echoed through Jonathan's memory.
His hands began to shake.
Vivian suddenly stood.
"This proves nothing."
The security manager looked at her.
"It proves you placed an unknown substance into her drink."
"It was medication."
"For whom?"
Vivian didn't answer.
Because everyone already knew.
Not for herself.
For Emma.
Jonathan looked at the woman he had married eight years earlier.
The woman he had trusted around his daughter.
The woman Emma had repeatedly claimed made her uncomfortable.
The woman he had defended.
Again and again.
And suddenly he remembered every warning he ignored.
Every excuse.
Every moment Emma went silent when Vivian entered the room.

The pieces began fitting together.
And the picture they created was horrifying.
