Chapter 1: The Note

Chapter 1: The Note

Michael stared at the security monitor, unable to move.

Emma finished counting the money and placed the bills exactly where she had found them. Then she slipped the note beneath the stack.

"18,000 € found on the dresser."

Nothing more.

No signature.

No request for recognition.

No hesitation.

She simply returned to her cleaning supplies and continued working.

For fifteen years, Michael had tested people.

Friends.

Employees.

Business partners.

Housekeepers.

Drivers.

Everyone failed eventually.

Greed always revealed itself.

But Emma?

She had not even looked around to see if anyone was watching.

She acted as though honesty was the most natural thing in the world.

Michael felt strangely uncomfortable.

He had expected disappointment.

Instead, he found himself questioning his own assumptions.

When Emma finished cleaning, she quietly left the room.

Michael remained frozen before the screen long after she was gone.

For the first time in years, he wondered whether he had misjudged someone.

Or perhaps...

Whether he had misjudged everyone.

That night, he couldn't sleep.

The image of Emma kneeling beside the money kept returning to his mind.

Not because she refused to steal it.

But because she seemed completely untouched by temptation.

And Michael no longer understood how that was possible.
