Ethan froze.
For one brief moment, no one moved.
Then the sales associate smiled politely.
"Mrs. Bennett, would you like to see the matching necklace as well?"
Mrs. Bennett.
Not Doris.
Not Mrs. Carter.
Mrs. Bennett.
The woman Ethan had introduced as his confused, fragile mother smiled naturally.
"There it is," she said.
"No memory problems today."
The clerk laughed.
"You always know exactly what you want."
I looked at Ethan.
He couldn't meet my eyes.
"Lily," I said softly, "wait over by the café, sweetheart."
She nodded without asking questions.
When she was out of earshot, I turned back to Ethan.
"Explain."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The woman sighed.
"I suppose the truth was going to come out eventually."
She looked at me.
"My name isn't Doris."
The world seemed to tilt.
"What?"
"My legal name is Margaret Bennett."
"I've never had dementia."
"I've never needed a walker."
I stared at Ethan.
"You lied to our daughter."
"You lied to me."
He finally spoke.
"I thought I could fix everything before you found out."
"What exactly were you trying to fix?"
His shoulders slumped.
"Debt."
