Chapter 2: The Plan Behind the Lies
We sat in a quiet corner of the mall while Lily enjoyed a hot chocolate nearby.
Ethan told me the truth.
Years before we met, he had guaranteed business loans for a close friend.
The business failed.
The debt remained.
Collection agencies had begun pursuing him again.
Instead of telling me, he built an elaborate lie.
His mother agreed to pretend she was mentally declining so Ethan could convince me to sign financial documents "for her care."
Once he had power of attorney, he planned to refinance our home and access assets that required both our trust and cooperation.
Including Lily's inheritance from her late father.
"I was going to pay everything back," Ethan insisted.
"I never wanted to hurt Lily."
I looked at him in disbelief.
"You already did."
"You asked an eleven-year-old child to keep secrets from her own mother."
His head dropped.
Margaret quietly removed the expensive bracelet she'd been trying on.
"I should never have agreed."
"I told myself I was helping my son."
"But I became part of the deception."
