Chapter 11 — The Betrayal That Wasn’t

Chapter 11 — The Betrayal That Wasn’t

The alarm began screaming.

Red lights flashed through the corridor.

Lorenzo's smile disappeared.

“What have you done?”

I didn't answer.

I grabbed Emma's hand and ran.

The baby cried against my shoulder.

Smoke began pouring from the ceiling.

Not fire.

Smoke.

A distraction.

But it was enough.

Lorenzo shouted for his men.

Doors slammed open.

Footsteps thundered through the clinic.

I turned left.

Then right.

I didn't know where I was going.

I only knew I had to keep moving.

Emma stumbled.

I picked her up.

“Hold on.”

“Mama, where's Eva?”

“We're getting her.”

“But the baby?”

“Her too.”

Three children.

Three lives.

I wasn't leaving anyone behind.

A door opened ahead.

Michael appeared.

His face was covered in blood.

“Anna!”

“Michael!”

“Where's Alessandro?”

Michael looked away.

“He's alive.”

My heart stopped.

“Alive?”

“He was hit.”

“How badly?”

“Bad.”

“Where is he?”

“Still inside.”

I tried to turn back.

Michael grabbed me.

“No.”

“He's my—”

“I know.”

His voice broke.

“But if you go back, Lorenzo gets all of you.”

I stared at him.

“Then what do we do?”

“Trust me.”

I didn't know whether I could.

Then Emma whispered:

“Uncle Michael.”

He looked at her.

“Yeah?”

“Daddy told me to find you.”

Michael's expression changed.

“What?”

“He said you know the way.”

Michael looked at me.

Then at Emma.

He nodded.

“Your father was right.”

He led us through a narrow maintenance tunnel.

We emerged behind the clinic.

A black SUV waited.

Daniel stood beside it.

My mother was there.

She was crying.

“Anna!”

I handed her the baby.

She looked down.

For the first time, her face changed completely.

“My granddaughter.”

I looked at her.

“Which one?”

She froze.

“What?”

“Which granddaughter?”

She stared at me.

I stepped closer.

“You told me there were two.”

She nodded.

“You told me you didn't know about the third.”

She looked away.

“Mom.”

She closed her eyes.

“You're right.”

“Then tell me everything.”

She looked toward Michael.

He nodded.

My mother finally spoke.

“Sofia didn't betray us.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“She was the one who protected the children.”

I remembered Sofia's face.

Her anger.

Her fear.

Her baby.

“She wasn't working with Lorenzo?”

“No.”

“Then why did she appear beside him?”

“Because she was pretending.”

I stared.

“What?”

My mother wiped her tears.

“She infiltrated Lorenzo's operation twenty years ago.”

Michael added:

“She became his most trusted adviser.”

I couldn't believe it.

“The woman we thought was his daughter?”

“She is.”

Michael nodded.

“But she hates him.”

“Why?”

“Because he killed her mother.”

I looked at my mother.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell us?”

“Because if Lorenzo knew Sofia was alive, he would have killed her.”

I swallowed.

“And the betrayal?”

My mother looked at me.

“There wasn't one.”

The truth came out slowly.

Twenty-seven years earlier, my mother had discovered Lorenzo's plan.

He wanted to create heirs whose blood would satisfy the Moretti Trust.

He believed power could be guaranteed through genetics.

Sofia was the first child born under the program.

Michael was the second.

Alessandro was the third.

And I was the fourth.

But unlike the others, I was never supposed to know.

My mother stole me from the family.

She changed my name.

She erased my records.

She built an entirely different life for me.

Then Daniel found me.

And everything began again.

“Why did Lorenzo create Emma and Eva?”

I asked.

My mother looked at the baby.

“Because the original trust had been amended.”

“How?”

“It no longer recognized the children of Lorenzo.”

“What did it recognize?”

She looked at me.

“Your descendants.”

I felt cold.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather believed Lorenzo had become dangerous.”

Michael shook his head.

“He wanted the empire to pass to you.”

“But I didn't know.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“Then why did Lorenzo need Emma?”

“Because Emma was your first direct heir.”

I looked down at her.

My daughter.

The child who had unknowingly become the center of an empire.

“And Eva?”

My mother swallowed.

“Insurance.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“If Emma died, Eva would inherit.”

“And the third child?”

She looked at the baby.

“The final contingency.”

I stared.

“She inherits if both fail.”

The baby began crying.

I held her closer.

“This is insane.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“There is something else.”

I looked at him.

He looked exhausted.

“Lorenzo didn't create the children alone.”

“Who helped him?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Me.”

I stared.

“What?”

“I didn't know what I was helping create.”

“You knew about the embryos.”

“I knew there was a genetic project.”

“And you still helped?”

“I thought it was medical research.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was recruited by your mother.”

I turned toward her.

“Mom?”

She nodded.

“I needed someone I could trust.”

Daniel continued.

“I discovered what Lorenzo was doing too late.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was threatened.”

“With what?”

“Your life.”

I stared at him.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had to disappear.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I know.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“But this time it's true.”

A distant explosion shook the ground.

Everyone froze.

Michael looked toward the clinic.

“Lorenzo.”

Another explosion.

The sky above the building turned orange.

My mother screamed.

“Sofia!”

Michael grabbed a weapon.

“I'll go.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“I'll come.”

He stared at me.

“You have the children.”

“I can still help.”

“No.”

A third explosion.

Michael ran.

I watched him disappear into the smoke.

Then I heard a vehicle approaching.

Three black SUVs emerged from the trees.

Security men jumped out.

At the front was Alessandro.

Blood covered his shirt.

But he was alive.

I ran toward him.

“You're alive.”

He smiled faintly.

“Disappointed?”

I hit his shoulder.

He winced.

“Don't joke.”

He looked at the baby.

“Who's that?”

I smiled through tears.

“Your niece.”

He looked at the baby.

Then at Emma.

Then at me.

“Everyone survived?”

“Not yet.”

He nodded.

“Then let's finish it.”

Alessandro gathered everyone inside the SUV.

“We have twenty minutes before the police arrive.”

Michael wasn't there.

“Sofia?”

“Missing.”

My mother looked toward the clinic.

“Lorenzo escaped.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“How?”

She didn't answer.

He looked at Daniel.

“Do you know?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Then who?”

A voice came through the radio.

Michael.

“Boss.”

Alessandro grabbed it.

“Where are you?”

Static.

Then:

“I found something.”

“What?”

“Your father's records.”

“Where?”

“Underground.”

“Can you get them?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Michael's breathing was heavy.

“Because I'm trapped.”

Alessandro looked at me.

“I'll go.”

I grabbed his arm.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I can't lose you.”

He softened.

“You won't.”

“I already thought you were dead.”

He squeezed my hand.

“Not tonight.”

Michael was trapped beneath the clinic.

The explosion had collapsed the tunnel.

Alessandro entered alone.

I waited outside.

Minutes passed.

Then ten.

Then fifteen.

Finally, the ground shook.

Alessandro emerged carrying Michael.

Michael was barely conscious.

But in his hand was a metal box.

“What is that?”

Michael smiled.

“The truth.”

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Medical records.

DNA results.

And one handwritten letter.

Alessandro opened it.

The letter was from his grandfather.

It said:

If Lorenzo discovers this document, he will attempt to destroy every legitimate heir.

The children must never be separated.

They must be raised together.

The trust belongs to them equally.

I stared.

“Equally?”

Michael nodded.

“Lorenzo lied.”

Alessandro looked at the documents.

“The bloodline purity clause doesn't exist.”

“What?”

“It was forged.”

I felt stunned.

“All of this happened because of a fake clause?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because Lorenzo wanted control.”

I understood.

The empire had never required a perfect heir.

Lorenzo simply wanted everyone to believe it did.

Then we heard footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Sofia emerged from the darkness.

She was carrying a weapon.

Her clothes were torn.

Blood covered her forehead.

But she was alive.

Michael rushed toward her.

“You're alive.”

She smiled.

“Disappointed?”

He laughed.

Then hugged her.

I watched them.

Brother and sister.

Two survivors.

Two people who had spent decades pretending not to know each other.

Sofia looked at me.

“You have the children?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She looked at Alessandro.

“And you?”

“Alive.”

“Good.”

Then she looked toward the road.

“He's coming.”

“Lorenzo?”

She nodded.

“He knows everything.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“Let him come.”

Lorenzo arrived alone.

No guards.

No weapons visible.

He walked slowly through the snow.

Alessandro waited at the gate.

I stood behind him with Emma and the baby.

Michael and Sofia stood on either side.

My mother remained behind us.

Lorenzo stopped.

He looked at the children.

Then at Alessandro.

“You think you've won.”

Alessandro said nothing.

Lorenzo looked at me.

“You still don't know who you are.”

“I know enough.”

“You're my daughter.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“I belong to myself.”

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

“You were created to inherit.”

“No.”

“You were created to continue the bloodline.”

“No.”

“You were created for me.”

I shook my head.

“I was born for myself.”

Silence.

Then Lorenzo smiled.

“You sound like your mother.”

He raised a weapon.

Sofia fired first.

Lorenzo fell.

The gun slid across the snow.

Everyone froze.

I looked at Sofia.

She lowered her weapon.

“I've been waiting twenty-seven years.”

Lorenzo looked up at her.

“Betrayer.”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Daughter.”

Then she walked away.

Police sirens approached in the distance.

Lorenzo was arrested alive.

For the first time, his empire had no protection.

No secrets.

No control.

But as officers took him away, he looked at me.

He smiled.

And whispered:

“You still haven't found the last child.”

My blood went cold.

I looked at the baby in my arms.

Then at Emma.

Then toward the darkness.

Because I suddenly understood.

The third child wasn't the baby.

May you like

The third child was still missing.

And Lorenzo had just made sure we knew it.
