CHAPTER 13 — THE FIRE RETURNS

CHAPTER 13 — THE FIRE RETURNS
The first thing Noah noticed was the smell.
Smoke.
Not old smoke.
Not the dusty scent of a fireplace that hadn't been used in years.
Fresh smoke.
He stopped the car at the end of the abandoned estate road.
For a moment, he simply sat there with both hands gripping the steering wheel.
The mansion stood ahead of him, black against the storm.
Every window was dark.
Except one.
The cellar window.
A faint orange glow pulsed behind the glass.
Noah's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
COME ALONE.
Then another.
BRING THE REPORT.
He looked at the passenger seat.
The DNA report lay inside a brown envelope.
His father's name was still written across the back.
Thomas Vale.
Alive.
His entire life had been built around a dead man.
His mother had been declared dead.
His grandfather had been declared dead.
His father had been declared dead.
And now all three deaths had turned out to be lies.
Noah stepped out of the car.
Rain struck his face.
He walked toward the house.
Every instinct told him to turn around.
Every instinct except one.
Lily was inside.
The front door opened before he touched it.
Noah froze.
A voice came from the darkness.
"You came."
Noah entered.
"Where's Lily?"
"Downstairs."
"Take me to her."
The voice laughed softly.
"Still giving orders."
Noah looked around.
"Who are you?"
No answer.
He heard footsteps retreating.
Then the basement door opened.
A warm orange glow rose from below.
Noah descended.
Halfway down, he stopped.
Someone had placed candles along the stairs.
Photographs hung between them.
His mother.
His father.
Thomas.
Daniel.
Victor.
Vanessa.
And Lily.
The photographs became newer as he descended.
Until the final one.
It had been taken that night.
Lily was sitting in a chair.
Alive.
Terrified.
Beside her stood Vanessa.
Noah's jaw tightened.
He continued down.
The cellar had been transformed.
A long table stood in the center.
Documents covered it.
Old photographs.
Bank statements.
Medical records.
Birth certificates.
At the far end, Lily sat tied to a chair.
Her eyes widened when she saw him.
"Dad!"
Noah started toward her.
A gun clicked.
"Stop."
He froze.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Older than the photograph.
Thin.
His hair was gray.
A scar crossed his jaw.
But Noah knew immediately.
Thomas.
His father.
Thomas looked at him for a long moment.
Then whispered:
"My son."
Noah's chest tightened.
"Let Lily go."
Thomas looked at the girl.
"She isn't hurt."
"You kidnapped her."
"I protected her."
"From what?"
"From them."
He pointed toward Vanessa.
She stood near the wall, arms crossed.
Noah looked at her.
"You."
Vanessa smiled.
"You've been so predictable."
"You escaped police custody."
"I was never officially arrested."
Noah stared.
"What?"
She smiled.
"The officer who arrested me worked for us."
Noah's blood ran cold.
"Ruiz?"
"No."
She laughed.
"Ruiz is clean."
"Then who?"
Vanessa looked toward Thomas.
"Ask him."
Thomas lowered the gun.
"No."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"You promised."
Thomas ignored her.
He looked at Noah.
"I didn't bring you here to hurt you."
"Then why?"
"Because there isn't much time."
Thomas walked to the table.
He picked up a photograph.
It showed Elena twenty-eight years earlier.
Pregnant.
Standing beside Thomas.
Noah stared.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"Mom knew."
"Yes."
"Daniel knew."
Thomas nodded.
"He knew I was your father."
Noah's voice cracked.
"Why did you leave?"
Thomas looked down.
"Because I was forced to."
"By Victor?"
"By Adrian."
Noah frowned.
"Adrian?"
"The man calling himself Victor."
Thomas's expression hardened.
"He killed the real Victor."
Noah stepped closer.
"Why?"
"Because Victor discovered Adrian had been stealing from the family."
"And you?"
"I found out."
Thomas looked at the photograph.
"Then Elena became pregnant."
Noah's eyes filled with anger.
"So you abandoned her."
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"I was taken."
Twenty-eight years earlier, Thomas had been working overseas.
He disappeared after boarding a private plane.
The official story was that he had died in a crash.
There was no body.
No funeral.
Only a report.
But the crash had never happened.
Adrian had arranged the disappearance.
He imprisoned Thomas in another country.
For years, Thomas tried to escape.
Then, three years ago, he succeeded.
By then, Elena had already disappeared.
Noah had grown up believing Daniel was his father.
Thomas had watched from a distance.
"Why didn't you come back?"
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Adrian threatened Lily."
Noah looked at his sister.
"He knew about her."
"He knew everything."
"Then why take her now?"
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
"Because Vanessa changed the plan."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You weren't supposed to survive."
Thomas stared at her.
"Neither were you."
She smiled.
"We're both disappointments."
Noah walked toward Lily.
Thomas raised the gun again.
"Don't."
"She's my sister."
"I know."
"Then let her go."
Thomas hesitated.
Then slowly lowered the weapon.
Noah reached Lily.
He cut the restraints.
She immediately threw herself into his arms.
"Dad."
"I'm here."
She cried against his chest.
"I knew you'd come."
Noah held her tightly.
Thomas watched them.
Something in his expression broke.
"I missed that."
Noah looked at him.
"You don't get to say that."
"I know."
"You missed twenty-eight years."
"I know."
"You let me believe my father was dead."
"I know."
"Do you have any idea what that did to me?"
Thomas swallowed.
"No."
Noah stepped closer.
"Then don't ask me to forgive you."
Thomas nodded.
"I won't."
Suddenly, a loud metallic click came from beneath the floor.
Thomas turned.
"What was that?"
Vanessa smiled.
"The second phase."
Thomas's expression changed.
"No."
The lights flickered.
Then the cellar doors slammed shut.
Smoke began pouring from the walls.
Lily coughed.
Noah looked around.
"What's happening?"
Thomas grabbed Vanessa.
"What did you do?"
She laughed.
"The fire."
Thomas shoved her away.
"You said there would be no fire."
"I changed my mind."
Noah looked at the flames appearing along the far wall.
The room was filling rapidly.
"There's no exit."
Thomas pointed toward the back.
"There is."
He ran to a wooden cabinet and shoved it aside.
A narrow tunnel appeared.
"Go!"
Noah grabbed Lily.
"What about you?"
Thomas looked toward Vanessa.
"Get her out."
Noah stared.
"Why?"
"Because she knows where the second door is."
Vanessa laughed.
"You still trust me?"
"No."
Thomas grabbed her arm.
"But you want to live."
They entered the tunnel.
Smoke followed.
Noah carried Lily.
Thomas pushed Vanessa ahead.
Behind them, flames spread across the cellar.
Noah heard something collapse.
The ceiling shook.
"Faster!"
They reached a metal door.
Locked.
Thomas pulled out a key.
Nothing.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Vanessa smiled.
"The key is wrong."
Thomas turned.
"You changed the lock."
"Yes."
"How do we open it?"
She pointed toward Noah.
"His blood."
Noah stared.
"What?"
"Adrian designed the system."
She looked at the DNA report.
"Only a direct descendant can open it."
Noah cut his palm against the edge of the keyhole.
Blood touched the scanner.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Cold air rushed in.
They stumbled outside.
Behind them, the mansion erupted into flames.
Noah turned.
The old estate burned.
Just like it had twenty-eight years earlier.
The fire rose into the night.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Thomas whispered:
"It was never supposed to happen like this."
Noah looked at him.
"What wasn't?"
"The first fire."
Thomas stared at the flames.
"It wasn't meant to kill Elena."
"We know."
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"You don't."
He pointed toward the burning house.
"The first fire was designed to destroy one specific room."
"Which room?"
Thomas looked at Lily.
"The nursery."
Noah felt cold.
"Why?"
"Because that was where you were."
Noah's face went pale.
"What?"
Thomas nodded.
"Adrian believed you were the key to everything."
"Why?"
"Because your birth was never supposed to happen."
Elena had discovered something before Noah was born.
Adrian's criminal empire was connected to an international network.
The network used family trusts and inherited identities to move money across countries.
Thomas was supposed to inherit everything.
But if Thomas had a son, the legal structure would eventually pass to Noah.
Adrian couldn't allow that.
"So he tried to kill me."
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
"But Mom?"
"She refused to give you up."
"And Daniel?"
"Daniel helped her."
Noah looked at Thomas.
"Then why did you disappear?"
Thomas's eyes hardened.
"Because Adrian wasn't the only enemy."
Noah frowned.
"Who else?"
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
She stared back.
"Your grandmother."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Don't."
Thomas ignored her.
"Your grandmother knew about the network."
Noah stared.
"She helped Adrian."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That's not true."
Thomas laughed bitterly.
"She gave him the keys."
"What keys?"
"The accounts."
Noah looked at Vanessa.
"You knew?"
She said nothing.
"You knew everything."
"I knew enough."
"Then why did you stay?"
Vanessa's face changed.
"Because I loved him."
Noah stared.
"Who?"
Vanessa looked at Thomas.
Silence.
Thomas's face hardened.
"No."
Vanessa smiled sadly.
"Yes."
Noah suddenly understood.
She hadn't been protecting Adrian.
She had been protecting Thomas.
Or believed she was.
But there was something else in her expression.
Something darker.
"You were working together."
Thomas didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
"At first."
Thomas looked away.
"We had a plan."
"What plan?"
"To destroy Adrian."
"Then why did you hurt Lily?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Because the plan failed."
Police sirens approached.
Ruiz arrived with armed officers.
"Everyone step away from the house!"
Noah raised his hands.
Thomas did the same.
Vanessa didn't.
She turned toward the burning mansion.
Then she smiled.
Ruiz shouted:
"Vanessa! Don't move!"
She reached into her coat.
Several officers raised their weapons.
Noah stepped backward.
Vanessa pulled out a small device.
She pressed one button.
The burning mansion exploded.
The blast knocked everyone to the ground.
Noah covered Lily with his body.
Glass rained around them.
When he looked up, the upper floor had collapsed.
Thomas was missing.
Vanessa was missing.
Only Elena remained standing.
She looked toward the flames.
"No."
Noah stood.
"Mom?"
Elena was staring at something in the burning doorway.
A figure emerged.
Walking slowly.
Alive.
Noah's heart stopped.
The man removed his coat.
It was Adrian.
He looked directly at Noah.
Then at Elena.
Then at Lily.
And smiled.
"You finally understand."
Ruiz raised his weapon.
"Adrian Vale! You're under arrest!"
Adrian laughed.
"Detective."
He held up a small envelope.
"You may arrest me."
He looked at Noah.
"But the moment you do, the rest of your family dies."
Ruiz froze.
Noah stared.
"What did you do?"
Adrian's smile widened.
"I gave myself insurance."
He dropped the envelope at Noah's feet.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
Alive.
Bound to a chair.
Noah looked at Elena.
She covered her mouth.
"Isabel."
Adrian smiled.
"The last witness."
Noah looked toward the burning mansion.
"You can't win."
Adrian stepped backward into the smoke.
"I don't need to."
His voice echoed through the night.
"I only need you to make one choice."
Then he disappeared.
Noah opened the photograph again.
On the back were six words.
BRING LILY. COME WITHOUT YOUR MOTHER.
Noah looked at his sister.
Lily looked back at him.
And for the first time, Noah realized the fire had never been the end of the story.
May you like
It had always been a doorway.
And Adrian had just opened it again.
