CHAPTER 2 — THE CALLS THAT NEVER STOPPED

CHAPTER 2 — THE CALLS THAT NEVER STOPPED

Adrian's phone rang again.

Then again.

And again.

He answered the first call with a confident smile.

"What is it?"

The smile disappeared within seconds.

"What do you mean the transfer has been suspended?"

He ended the call.

Another arrived immediately.

Then another.

His chief financial officer.

The company's legal counsel.

Three different banks.

Every conversation ended the same way.

"We've received new ownership instructions."

Across the ballroom, Evelyn remained perfectly calm.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't celebrate.

She simply watched.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"This is another bluff."

Arthur Bennett quietly handed Adrian a sealed folder.

"You should read the first page."

Adrian opened it.

His hands froze.

The shareholder register listed one name above all others.

Evelyn Hart Family Trust.

Controlling interest.

Voting control.

Irrevocable authority.

He looked up in disbelief.

"No..."

Arthur nodded.

"You were the public face."

"She was the owner."

The ballroom fell silent.

For years, everyone had applauded Adrian's success.

No one had noticed who had quietly built the foundation beneath it.
