CHAPTER 3 — THE PROMISE SHE KEPT

CHAPTER 3 — THE PROMISE SHE KEPT

The following morning, the board of directors assembled before sunrise.

Adrian entered expecting an argument.

Instead, every seat was already occupied.

Evelyn sat quietly at the head of the table.

Arthur stood beside her.

"The meeting will now begin."

Adrian laughed nervously.

"You can't remove me."

Arthur slid a resolution across the table.

"The shareholders already have."

One by one, the directors voted.

Every motion passed.

Adrian was removed as Chief Executive Officer.

Vanessa, whose executive position had depended on Adrian's authority, resigned before the vote concluded.

After the meeting, Adrian finally asked the question that had haunted him all night.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

"Because I wanted someone to love me..."

"...not my ownership."

His shoulders dropped.

"I did love you."

She shook her head gently.

"You loved the version of me you believed needed you."

The room grew quiet.

May you like
