The ballroom doors opened.
Several directors entered, still wearing evening attire.
One approached Adrian.
"I'm sorry."
"We've received formal notice."
He handed Adrian a sealed envelope.
"The board has accepted your resignation effective immediately."
Vanessa stepped backward.
"You can't do that."
A second director answered quietly.
"We already have."
Adrian stared at the signatures.
Every vote was unanimous.
Not because Evelyn demanded it.
Because the directors had lost confidence after reviewing documented misconduct toward employees and repeated breaches of fiduciary obligations.
