Vanessa forced a nervous laugh.
"He's only three."
"He doesn't understand."
Ethan knelt in front of his son.
"Noah."
His voice was gentle.
"How do you know her?"
The little boy frowned as though the answer were obvious.
"She sings the moon song."
Lauren closed her eyes.
Only one person had ever known that lullaby.
Years earlier, Clara had written it herself.
No recording.
No sheet music.
Just a song she sang every night before Noah fell asleep.
Ethan slowly looked back at Lauren.
"You know that song?"
Lauren nodded.
"I do."
"How?"
She hesitated.
Then reached into the pocket of her apron.
She unfolded a tiny piece of worn paper.
A faded photograph.
A young woman held a newborn baby while Ethan smiled beside them.
The woman's face looked remarkably like Lauren's.
